If you want some really helpful advice, take a look at post #60 by "armin":

============

In keeping with the spirit of IconPack's 150 Domaining Tips thread, I thought I'd make a thread where everyone can post their biggest pet peeves and annoyances with newbies. That way, new members can learn what not to do, or can at least be sent to this thread if they do something annoying.

Rules:
  • Keep it short.
  • Keep it NamePros forum specific.
  • Be nice. This isn't a thread to bash new members, it's a place to post advice.
  • Try not to duplicate other people's posts.

I'll start:

My biggest pet peeves are:

1) When someone argues with people replying to their appraisal request.
2) Misleading or ambiguous (vague) thread titles.
3) People begging for reputation points.

Very insightful. I was so impressed by your post that I decided to showcase it on the original post. Enjoy! :p

106. "I just registered TM.ext, will I get in trouble?"
107. "All that will happen is I lose the domain, what else can happen?"
108. "There is no TM, I can't find it in USPTO.GOV"
109. People who argue even after LaBrocca and DNQuest.com agree.
110. If I have to type in your thread "Goto the search box, type in "trademark" then read for a week, then type in "tm" and read the threads you missed"... you are definate noob.

111. You're a noob if you think every LLLL.com you have is pronounceable. For example:

YXQV.com - Pronounceable LLLL.com for sale!!! RARE!!1eleventyone1!!1

Seems like every LLLL in the for sale thread is "pronounceable" even though maybe 1% actually are.

118) You excitedly post in the forum that you've received an offer on your newly registered domain, and all you have to do is pay for an appraisal! :hehe:
119) You post, word-for-word, the appraisal scam email you've received in the forum, asking if it's a scam.
120) "Drive-by" spam in NamePros Chat

122) Expecting premium names that gets backorder for reg. fee and argue why he/she couldn't get it for reg. fee

123) Offering you their crappy domain hack after seeing your sig. only contains solid hacks.

124) PMing you with their 'high priced' domains and then insulting you when you don't agree. Specially irritating are the 'bargains' they offer.

125) Have NO understanding of the local laws / registrar agreements / local significance when booking ccTLDs. :o

126) Squatting on domains that don't get any traffic or revenue in any case :p

127) Believe that their non researched hand reg will someday be worth millions, after all that's what the articles said!

128) Hoping their non generic hand regs will get them 1000s of $$$ on parking.

129) Questioning people with tons of rep about their 'credentials'.

130) Repeating what people are saying above, agreeing/disagreeing with people without reasons, just to increase post count. :hehe:

37. Asking busy people about stuff via PM.

I think this is the worst. Unless asked for, pming domains for sale/appraisal requests/other unrelated requests are a pain. Not only do they take time but usually the person asking will try to prove why their reasoning is superior.

I'm going to start reporting unsolicited pms now, just sick of them, fair warning.

77) People that offer you 50% of profit on a new Business Project were you have to do all the work and they only provide a bad/new/recently regged domain name.

Roflmao, so true, or development projects where they will provide their superior ideas and you your lowly tech skills, while being treated as an 'employee' while trying to get 'features' added!

First off, I think a lot of what has been posted in the early stages of this thread doesn't really have anything to do with being a newbie. For instance:

JBebbington said:
6) When they think Their Name is worth $20k because it "luks kool"
7) After you point out they won't get reg fee for it, they tell you "u obviusly dont no wot ur tlkin bout lol just dnt pst here no more"

Are we claiming that all newbies are illiterate?

A lot of domaining is common sense, IMO. Its fairly easy to learn the basics, I guess you just need a lot of persistence on top of that.

Secondly, and more importantly, I think if we ever want to learn anything we should accept that we don't really know anything. There is no such thing as a newbie, IMO we're all learning, all the time.

133) Thinking you know everything.

134. parking domains at SEDO and checking "Offers received" 10 times a day
135. noting "Premium Generic Domain Name for sale! 100,000,000+ searches in Google!" while not using quotes in Google
136. don't know about redirection like 301 (fake Alexa Rank, fake pagerank).
