.... I remember when Network solutions was $35 for .com....

I pay 8.75$ and have been since 2005. You made that Netsol example, I was just pointing out it was silly since you only had to remember as far as today.

I have not seen one logical argument in this thread to buy new gtlds. In fact if you like them then you should not buy them, so those registries will keep dropping them ( aka Frank Schilling) and you will be picking them up for 99 cents. Do not pay any premium for new gtlds. Its obviously a scam and u can pick them up later for pennies! Do not let registries control what u do, but control registars and registries with your buying patterns.

wow...I haven't been there in years. When the shift in pricing began I assumed they followed suit.
lol... the example was a general example on the industry as a whole. Everywhere use to be $35, some higher...and now like most others, we pay under $9. That was the only point. I should have used another registrar who actually lowered their pricing, but I "assumed" peeps would get the point.

I prefer $.1.99 transfer codes for renewals, and 99 cents for new domains, but 8:75 is better than $35. Good job guys!

Yeah, I prefer staying at one place instead of chasing transfer discounts. I find that the time saved only managing a single registrar account with a good interface is worth more to me.

99 cents for new domains.. Well I havent hand-regged in years and years. Chances are that what you hand-reg wont even be worth 99 cents...

Chances are that you hand reg $8.75 domains will not be worth more than 99 cents, but chances are pretty good for MY 99 cents hand registrations to be sold for 100 X +

No, good job on you....that's a lot of work to manage, depending on how many domains you have, but really thrifty on your part. Smart.

Hostpapa.com had $1.39 cool transfer code few weeks ago I used it like 150 domains. I saved $1,500 in one day of transfers. Saving here and there all adds up.

The problem is that the registries can jack up the price dramatically and price you out of your domains by requalifying them as 'premium'. And you cannot renew for more than 10 years in advance.
They are not regulated like .com or ccTLDs.
We have already seen examples. One example: http://www.thedomains.com/2015/09/2...-in-the-new-gtld-space-goes-to-mind-machines/

But the registries/registrars usually don't say they are jacking up the price, instead they say the names were improperly allocated due to some bug or clerical oversight. But it's the same thing for the unfortunate domain holder. You pay for their mistakes.

PS: if you look at the list of domains that Berkens dropped, almost all seem to be available. Maybe the registries should be less greedy, and they would have more registered domains.
That kind of pricing is for suckers only. When normal, non-domainer people see this, what are they thinking ? Joke.

My advice: avoid extensions that are unregulated or poorly regulated. Investment security is not something that you should ignore.

Remember that some TLDs will cease to exist in the near future. My prediction is 5 years. I am sure that some people will shake heads in disbelief, but too many strings are not viable and we know it. Icann continues to approve TLDs that are DOA. It's a recipe for chaos.
In fact, I am thinking that registries are trying to squeeze the maximum money now because they don't expect to be around for that long.

Like them or not but I would say they have underperformed compared to the high expectations that some had.

I think Rick Schwartz got it right and his predictions were more accurate. Rick understood where domains were going in 1996 and he understood where the new Gs were going.

Listen to some of the projections that were made.

I think .KIWI thought they would get 20% share of 600k .nz domains, they have 10k at the moment, hardly growing.

.IRISH thought they would get a good share of the millions of irish people around. They have only 2k domains 1 year after launch.

I can not think of worse investment than new gtld. Lets play a game. Can anyone come up with something more stupid? What kind of investment can be possibly worse?

he owns a registry, maybe he wants it to make more money than owning them privately. don't know, but makes since to make a $1 as ceo of a company for a year, and the company make a billion, you know.

Another huge issue with new gtlds. If registry goes broke you lose all your domains! This will never happen with dot com Verisign!! I do not think people realise it. If they did, they would never buy this crap.

Not true. Google EBERO.
