Will domain be available after expiring ?

Hello , please help me answer this question , will a domain be available after being expired ?? or it must pass through other levels such pending - delete and such ones ?
* about drop catchers , how do they catch the domain in the instant they drop ? and when they are offered in auction ( I understand that if more than one asking for this backordering , the ywill put it in auction ) , do other companies like pool , if no one is asking for this domain there , will not make an auction for registering it for him ,, only the other company ( snapnames for example ) will have auctions because there are more than one need the domain ?...

* cant I get an expiring domain without going through either snapnames or pool ? I mean , what are they using to get the domain regisered in the time it drops ??
