Backordering/TLD query

Hey,

About 6 months ago now I bought my first domain and in the past 2 months I've finally been able to put the finishing touches to the website.

Today i was looking through my keywords and stumbled across my 7th most searched for keyword (1000 times globally per month (exact)) which was great, I bought it!

My first question would be about the TLD, it ended in .co.uk which is where my customer audience is majority based, in the UK. (Followed by USA, Canada and Ireland).. I was wondering whether the endings in TLD's affect Google's search engine results?
For example, if I'm on Google UK and search my keyword i may be top of the results but then if i go onto Google US and search for the same keyword i may not be top, or anywhere on the first page. Could that possibly be because of the TLD being made for UK? Or is that just that there's different competition for whatever reason?

Secondly after finding my new domain today i continued to do some research on some of my other keywords and one of which (my joint 5th keyword, searched 1.3k times a month on exact) is set to be released on the 21st January ending in .com. I found out that the domain was held by GoDaddy previously. My question is whether it's more than likely GoDaddy will retain the domain and try to auction it or whether one of the other backording services will have just as much chance as Godaddy will have in acquiring the domain at the drop?

In short, if a domain was previously held at GoDaddy do they have a higher chance of retaining the domain than another backordering company such as SnapNames/NameJet/Pool?

And will they attempt to auction the domain publicly even if i have it on backorder with them or will it be a private auction between those who have it backordered with GoDaddy?

To be honest, im not sure whether I'll have any competition but it's always better to be safe than sorry.

(I've already added the domain to backorder with Pool/SnapNames/NameJet/GoDaddy)

Many thanks, Jamie

I suppose the 21st Jan is the expiry date not the drop date? If it's the expiry date, and the existing owner doesn't renew, GoDaddy will auction off the domain from about 25 days after expiry for a period of 10 days. The domain will retain it's original age.

If it is the drop date, then you will need to backorder with the big guns SnapNames/NameJet/Pool because when a domain drops it is a free-for-all to register the domain, and GoDaddy cannot compete with these big guns on the drop (unless none of them have backorders on the domain and it is an easy registration that GoDaddy can pick up). The domain will be a new registration.

Hi Stub, thanks for your reply.

It expired last year the domain, here's the proof that it's in its deletion stage: gyazo.com/8a5751e8e5cc33e84d3c1848f407c116.png

But your raise an interesting subject on the domain age. I presume if a domain gets deleted and becomes available once again to the public that the domain age is reset to 0?
Otherwise if its auctioned off at by the original domain holder it retains its age?

Also, what happens to any backlinks previously directing to the domain if a domain was deleted? Do they retain their juice whether its negative or positive or are these negated somehow?

Thanks again, Jamie

1) Yes the age gets reset to 0 if the domain drops.
2) It's not auctioned off by the original owner. It's auctioned of by the Registrar. GoDaddy in this case.
3) Backlinks retain their juice, but will probably reduce to 0 over time if you park the domain, but may continue active if you revive the site to it's former glory.

Thanks Stub, that's pretty interesting.

Do you know much about the TLD's?
My main website ends in .com and seems to be higher on all US search engines for my keywords as opposed to the UK's Google search engine.

Why is this? Does the TLD ending affect SERPS?

Yes. Google's search give some weight to the local ccTLD in that country's searches. Which is only natural to be expected. Searches in England would normally be searching for UK sites.

Thought so, so how does .com get weighted in the SERPs from lets say Google UK?

I presume the next best thing after .co.uk from a Google UK search engine will be .com then .org?

Before you give money to Snapnames, better read this and other articles about the admitted auction fraud. It's huge and IMHO, you'd be a sucker giving your money to Snapnames. Here, read it and weep: http://www.aardvarkbusiness.net/chat/viewtopic.php?t=20943

There are lots of other articles too.

Yeah I read a good article before adding any back orders, they mentioned how it was suspicious that you can't see how many bidders there are because ultimately you could be bidding against yourself... Or a SnapNames employee as it turns out.

However, the article was made in 2005 the one I read and the one you linked me to was published in 2009 and it seems SnapNames was since sold by then? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hopefully one of the 2 other big hitters will pick the domain up before they do
