Why do traffic "jumps" occur?

Its weird, on one of my domains I recieve a steady flow of traffic of about 20 visitors per day. Then all of the sudden it jumped to 40+ visitors today. I have no explanation why this happened. On a previous occasion, the traffic jumped 70+ visitors in one day. This happens every two weeks or so.

Does anybody have an explanation why these "traffic" jumps occur? Is it totally random or does it reflect something that goes on in the world/cyberspace?

Really puzzled.

Yeah, I get puzzled too. I had 43 views in three days on a three word domain with hyphens that never had traffic before.

I think it's the same person going back to my parked page cuz they like the ads.

However I took 'statistics' as a chosen subject at school, (many years ago) and my teacher said that statistics mean nothing if your figures are a minute % of the overall picture. I think there is truth in this. Your traffic is a Billionth of the daily web searches made making it hard to annylise.(Hell how do you spell that?).

My Statistics teacher also said the very first day in class, "The beauty about statistics is that you can make arrange them to mean anything you want!!! Thats the big difference Between Mathamatics and Statistics. A mathamatician is regulated by God. A statistician can be God!!!"

I always remember that quote - Great Advice

Reasons for traffic jumps: Some random site with decent traffic decided to add your link. Yeah thats about it.

That's correct. Someone might've posted a link on a forum, or in their blog.
This is called "getting popular" :) (only it's more efficient when your traffic jumps from 100 to 2000, happened to me before) :hehe:

This is a great example:

It was the evening of Oct. 5, 2004. Schilling, who is 36, was monitoring his sites from the Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Fla., where he and his family had been living since Hurricane Ivan leveled their house in the Cayman Islands a month earlier. As Schilling was scanning traffic data, he noticed that something wasn’t right. An enormous burst of traffic was threatening to take down his servers.

He pulled up Google News, quickly discovering the culprit. The vice presidential debate between Cheney and Sen. John Edwards was going on, and to defend his record, Cheney told viewers to look at Factcheck.com. Cheney had meant to say Factcheck.org, a site run by the University of Pennsylvania. Factcheck.com was one of Schilling’s.

Schilling had two options: Take down his servers, which could cost him tens of thousands of dollars in traffic to his other sites, or redirect Factcheck.com surfers elsewhere. The onslaught was useless to him, after all, since he only makes money when a visitor clicks on an advertiser’s link. No fan of the Bush administration, Schilling thought of an anti-Bush ad that financier George Soros had run in the Wall Street Journal. Seconds later, he pointed the surging traffic to GeorgeSoros.com, so that anyone seeking out Cheney’s record -- and many millions did -- was greeted with the message “Why We Must Not Reelect George Bush.”

The stupidest things have caused spikes in traffic in the past. I know one guy mentioned to me that one typo he had parked got accidently linked to on someone's popular blog, and earned him like $40 in a few hours until the correction was made...

once your site has a higher google search rank, i mean you site appears in the very front of the first list. you site traffic will increase very fast

I think you should install some scripts to track where the visitors came from, then you can find out
