Why do people hate new extensions with a passion?

Whenever a new extension is released, why are there people so passionate about its demise? You have supporters and naysayers. It's like a balance of the universe thing - good vs evil? :P

Actually, I hate ICANN more :)

Maybe due to the fact that many of the newly introduced extensions have "failed" and are viewed as a money making tool for the man?

We're always being stepped on by the man :x

Fear of keyword dilution, I suppose.

Could be the fact that they think the new extensions are just being released to make a profit by someone and adds not real benefit to society, internet, or economy. I could of course be wrong though.

The Internet is only 26 years, 1 week, 3 days, 19 hours and... 25 minutes old. How can anyone say that any new extensions have failed?

I don't like new extensions because there is no credibility. To make an end user sale an extension generally needs to be credible.

I think the internet would be worse of with only a select number of extensions. New extensions allow people to grab a keyword or name they like that was previously taken in another extension. The occasional extension doesn't hurt. If it fails, it fails, but I don't go around saying it will fail and how much I hate it. I have more important things to hate :D.

On the other side of the fence, you will have individuals who are heavily invested in a particular tld. They will defend it no matter what. I myself am heavily invested in .com :)

I adore .com and wish I had more premium keywords. In fact, I probably have no real premiums in .com. (I do in other extensions, such as .net, .info, and now .tel)

But I also like to cast my eye for new opportunities. I happen to think that .me and .tel offer some great opportunities, albeit in a different way for .tel.

There were plenty of naysayers for dot com as well... Just ask Rick Schwartz

If there weren't naysayers to new extensions, they would be even more overhyped and even more people would lose a lot of money investing in them. There's money to be made in ANY extension but when some people hail extensions like .mobi for instance as the 2nd coming of .com...well, I think we all know how that's gone.

Look at it this way: how often do you visit sites that end in .coop .biz .pro .aero .museum .asia .mobi .name etc ?
Now ask yourself seriously: are all these extensions even needed or barely useful ? IMO they pollute the global Internet namespace.

I will start praising Icann on the day they release a meaningful TLD.
So far I would say .info is the only ext that has some added value :imho:

I happen to be a fan of new extensions, just not the useless ones.

I hate to see people losing money and because of losing money in new extentions, they lose interests in domaining and web stuff.

I do not hate new extentions. But I am shocked when I saw for example somebody paying over $6k for Portland.Me and I am sure Maine.Me would have been bidded that much if it would have not been claimed as a TM by the MAine University.

And guess what, I have Indiana.IN (IN is the abbreviation of Indiana - a much larger state- just like .me is the abbreviation for Maine). And I have some Indiana City.IN's while people bidded $x.xxx for cities with a lower population in .ME. People lose common sense sometimes in landrushes, they do not calculate everything, and do not have a broad picture of things.

I second that! I agree everyone should think ahead and watch for the next tld star but believe in your own gut and not hype.

On a side note, don't you just hate those silly spammy ads with a stupid product wrapped around a box? Who made that famous!! I hope that sillyness dies soon.

One woman's pollution is another woman's goldmine.

%%-

People have made millions in so-called garbage.

With the exception of .biz, .name, and .mobi, those TLDs listed have serious restrictions as to who can register them.

People hate new extensions because most hold .coms and they don't want to see increases in the value of their investments damped down. I disagree with Kate's view that .info is the only alternative extension to add any value and everything else she lists is pollution.

I have several premium .infos but I moved on to .pro because .info isn't brandable and it's difficult to survive in the long run without a strong brand. Also, information is so freely available online that people expect it to be free and that leaves you relying on clicks which will continue to diminish in value.

.com is not naturally brandable, before the Internet sprung up only a narrow range of communication and technology companies added the com to their brand as a prefix or suffix. 15,000 US trademark include the word Pro and none of those refer to the domain extension.

Most people investing in alternative extension domains to resell will lose money. The number of .asia's and .me's regged are way out of proportion with their commercial viability and branding value.

Over the next 5-10 years the number of alternative extensions available will continue to grow, totals domains registered in any single alternative extension will fall, either that or reg fees will have to fall by 50%-75% to persuade people to retain them, non-diversified registries will fail and bigger registries will offer more and more extensions.

The benefit to the Internet of these changes will be better keywords availability in alternative extensions for aspiring developers, big businesses will stick with .com but the entrepreeurial talent will develop a wide range of alternative extensions. Just as eBay, Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube were built on weak .coms, the next generation of super sites are likely to be developed in India, China and Russia on alternative extensions.
