Why are 'L' Domains Popular?

There seems to be a lot of talk about domains containing only L's, like LLL.com, L-L-L.com, and so on. Why are these so popular?

When domainers refer to LLLL or LLL domains, they mean domains that are completely made-up of letters.

For instance:

LLLL.com = 4 Letter .com domain
LLL.com = 3 Letter .com domain

NNNN.com = 4 Number .com domain
NNN.com = 3 Number .com domain

CCCC.com = 4 Character .com domain (consisting of both letters & numbers)
CCC.com = 3 Character .com domain (consisting of both letters & numbers)


So, as you can see, we don't mean literally having a domain consisting of just the letter "L".
