By the way, this IS an "official" thread - in case you were wondering :hehe: .

My guesses for biggest flops:

dictionary words with no commercial connection

.us

.tv

"brandable" nonsense words

LLLLs in anything but .com

all but the 4-5 biggest silent auctions (or was that '07?)

.biz (or was that '06?)

:)

I dont see anyway IDN's are going to flop.... Expect them to continue to gain, especially with more and more world internet users.

Totally agreed in the case of LLLL.com only , not .net :)

Right. But at the same time the idea of .com names rising in value the same way LLL.com names have, :imho: is not a possibility.

There are many such predictions out there on the Web, such as:

1. Top prices will drop;

2. Top portfolio owners to diversify away from domains, investing in other technologies;

3. IDN to gain more momentum. There’s a huge need for people to communicate in their own language;

4. 3 letter .com to hit 10k minimum value by the end of 2008;

5, 6, 7........

mobi of course :hehe:
I think the disappointment will be in proportion with expectations.
The expectations with .asia are not that high anyway... at least we don't get the constant overhype it's refreshing :]

You guys really think .TV is going to flop hard? I surely hope not, but I guess within a year not much is going to change...

So you just copied what Sahar said :)

5. Top portfolio owners to diversify away from domains, investing in other technologies (Search technoligies, others), services ( arbitrage, others).

Still not enough. Sahar predicted it without even mention 1 reason. beside If Sahar, Schilling, Schwartz predict or stated anything .. we should believe in it ! :)

Like, they always advice to focus on .com only .. Do you think they really do ?

I respect these guys and their thoughts but you should have your own mind too.

.org -> registry made too high price increase, without 'sell outs' you pay more for .ORG than .COM or .NET

:-/ Hey, eg.domains, you are misunderstanding.

You see, in my original reply there is "such as..." that I've just introduced such predictions as to domains in 2008.

Code:
Still not enough. Sahar predicted it without even mention 1 reason.
:imho: Dude, have you heard that ICANN has been testing some IDNs already in some countries/regions? Do you know what ICANN will do in the near future?

:hehe:

I'm not sure how anybody could group .biz and .name with .pro. .name isn't commercial and is irrelevant. .biz is a made up phone text message extension and was never going to work from the start.

We are discussing this on NamePRO's aren't we? It's not an accident that pro came along for the ride with the generic keyword, it was added to make the keyword sound more credible and legitimate and appeal to enthusiasts.

People love the word Pro, it's internationally recognised, and it will work as soon as the registration restrictions are removed and reg fees come down. When that happens is anybody's guess but when it does, there will be a belated landrush because it's commercially brandable and makes sense.

The 3 letters "pro" gets added before and after generic keywords on developed sites more than any other 2 or 3 letter extension, including com.

I think all alternative extensions will continue to rise in 2008 because Internet usage is decades away from maxing out, acceptance of alternative extensions is very slowly gaining momentum but the domains have got to pack a punch in terms of brandability and goodness of fit with their extension to provide decent value versus equivalent priced 2 or 3 word .coms.

Was .us the flop of 07 then?

I tend to think .mobi as overated but I don't see it as being a flop.

The biggest flops will be made by the poorly educated domainers who think they have discovered a niche and register thousands of low traffic names that nobody wants or pays huge prices for overhyped names.

I think we will see less of Some really stupiddotcomthattakesalongtimetotype.com and more of "word".gd etc, move to lesser known tld's as the dot com's dry up...
