What to do if WHOIS data is invalid?

Hello

I tried to contact the owner of a domain that I would like to purchase, but the contact details in the WHOIS are outdated (both the phone # and the email are no longer in use)

Even the address of the registrant seems to be incomplete.

What should I do now? I'm currently contacting the registrar of the domain to see if they can help me, but is there anything else I can do?

Thanks

If you really want help, you will probably need to reveal the domain name. I will see what I can do if want to shoot me a PM.

Use DT's Domain History tool and/or Archive.org to search for alternate e-mail addresses. Good luck!

Try & initiate contact with the registrar or the registration service provider/reseller (some whois formats display that too).....maybe they can help... :)

File an invalid whois complaint with Internic (or GoDaddy if the domain is there). That may get the registrant to update his/her information.

So, they make money out of something that they're actually liable to do....they're bound to ask their customers to keep their whois data updated as per ICANN's regulations....how can they charge a fee for the same??

If you find a domain that has incorrect whois data and email godaddy, they will charge the customer $10 'administrative fee' for notifying them of the incorrect whois info.

Most likely whois information has not been updated properly yet!

That's exactly my point that I stated above....they charge customers for something that they're ideally not supposed to...its their duty to inform customers in case of any whois data discrepancy....

How did you conclude that the whois data is incorrect cause it could have also happened that they have opted for privacy protection and thats the reason why the data seems in accurate....... if thats the not the case then its really bad on Go Daddy's part to charge for such things cause as far as I know...according to ICANN's agreement or policies...its the duty of the Registrars to make sure that registrants update their details once in 6 months or a year....

Which they normally do, IIRC. Unless they changed their process, they charge
that fee if the WHOIS data isn't updated timely.

Yeah, I think it's in their registration agreement. Not saying I like it, but it's better than what they used to do (just delete the domain)

I was under the impression that it was their duty not necessarily to inform customers of bad whois data, but to police the accuracy of the data in general.

I think anyone crying over a $10 charge for their bogus whois needs to find a new line of work. Real webmasters and domainers keep their whois accurate.

And to the original poster, brendan52190, if you are lucky this amateur won't update his whois and they'll terminate the domain so you can get it for reg fee.

I filed the complaint a week ago and happened to check the whois now, and the owner updated his details -- just sent an email.

Hopefully I'll be able to get the name :)
