.US domains.US domains
Registering too many .info and longer, more specific .com domains with "development potential" and then not developing them.

Not starting early enough. I heard about Domain investment some years back.

But every disappointment is a blessing. The experience has been interesting so far. โ˜บ

Hesitating when I saw an awesome dropped domain, and 15 minutes later when I got back to it - it was taken!

That is a common thing that everybody does, I think it is a learning cove. The more and qucker you learn the earlier you adjust and refrain from such. Cheers

Why is investing in 5L.com domains a bad idea?

I believe OP was referring to 5L Chinese CHIPS (CCCCC), e.g zqpxh .com, and not Western CHIPS that are pronounceable like, KOOPY.com which is brandable.

There are also plenty of 5 letter dictionary words that have commanded very good sales, and would continue to do so.

It was both dot com words, One was so bad I am shocked it got an offer of 2500. It was 3 words domain.

Don't be too shocked. Have sold a hand-registered 3 word .com for a fairly high price ($4K) at BIN. It was a keyword domain with roughly a thousand monthly searches, and more than 8 potential end-user buyers in a competitive market.

I think this particular domain probably wouldn't have sold any sooner (same year) if it was not fairly priced and without a BIN. Putting all your domains as "make offer" may not always be a good strategy. It seems most buyers prefer BIN. DomainMarket uses similar pricing strategy for most of their names. However, make offer presents the most opportunity to maximize ROI.

The main point here is to put a fair price on some of ones domains, if that person wants more sales.

Biggest mistake was not buying two letter .coms when they were just $10k back in the day. The risk seemed too high at that time, but now...
Care to share what year period two letters .com was going for $10K?

The guy who recently sold By.com for 1.2 mill. bought it in 1996 for $5,000

Wow, what a great ROI in approximately 20 years! All that was possible, largely due to patience.

We can not predict the thing happens in the future. That's interesting.

Judging by what I'm reading around. most domainers
are after big money... and their account is always in red
between sold and renewal.
Please, allow me to suggest you something you can solve
that problem.
If you think out of the box, you can buy a $9.00 DN and
turn around and sell it for $65.00. Obviously, you may do better.
Let's do the numbers:
$65 - 9 รท 9 = 622.2222% Gross Profit meaning $56.00.
In what another kind of selling transaction could you do that
gross profit? Go ahead, I'm listening... which one?
Dedicate part of your working time and try it without giving up.
The distance between you and your goal is call Action.

Buying my first domains through my ISP. It was pretty common when I got online, in '99.
Of course virtually every domain of value got jacked, as customers had an ISP email addy.

DN = not dot.net, but abbreviation for DomainName.

Thinking that acquiring great keyword domains in .Net, .TV and .Info would be an easier and cheaper way to make money than battling it out with other investors for .COM domains at Namejet / Snapnames.

Of course now domainers have hundreds of TLD options to gamble away their life savings.
