i just got an offer on Linguistic.tv- the guy said he clicked on my banner on the dnjournal site-
ok, fine- but he wrote this:

If my offer of $xxx is acceptable, I would like to test the domain first before transferring funds for 14 days. If at that time it is satisfactory, I will send the payment.

now, this is the first time anyone has ever said this to me- test the domain... is he thinking i am going to just transfer a domain, with no payment? what is he talking about?

sounds like he wants to use dns for a bit to test traffic.

you can still have ownership while allowing him to test traffic by pointing dns to his nameservers.

ohhh ok- he never said that- but i have not written back till i knew what he meant- ok so i can just say that- i will point the name to your nameservers?

is this common? again, i have never had anyone ask me that before...

Yep, that's what it means.

And it's crap. If you had a high traffic domain and were selling it that way, it is acceptable to let them test it. for a day or two. and only if you trust them.

Because tv domains can take so long to propagate when changed, you could ruin your names reputation if they switcharoo and point something to porn site or worse.

And personally, 14 days is a bit long. Especially for a price that low. If it was multiple thousands, then a week maybe, and you can provide current stats.

But if you arent' selling it as high traffic, this is kind of a weird request. At least to me.

It is common practice when buying large portfolios or high traffic names. (sample a few names) but also comon practice to pay the owner (you) any money made when he/she is testing.

or sle he could make $20 for 14 days of doing nothing with no contract/agreement in place to make a deal come of it.

I'd be carefull and ask for some sort of insurance/proof of who they are before you set the NS's to his.

You cant loose the name and they wont have any rights over it if you only point to his (keep proof of there request).

oh for petes sake- the names doesnt get any traffic and i certainly have not done anything with it yet- its not exactly a type in kind of name let alone as a tv-

groan-

If there is no traffic to the name, not enough to warrant testing, give him the stats and say no, imo. If there is traffic and you make monies on the domain then charge him for the test and maybe credit him upon purchase. 14 days is way too long, say three days tops.

I agree with skg... if its not a traffic name, why bother testing lol !?!?

Since nobody mentioned it yet, congrats on the offer :)

I hope it works out well for you.

You could play their game too: write up a contract where the sales price is proportional to the number of uniques received within the 14 day test period, requiring them to purchase at $x when x number of uniques is reached, increasing at a rate of $x per x uniques thereafter. ;)

14 days are a lot to find another buyer and resell it before buying it from u....

Makes no sense for a domain that obviously does not get type in traffic. 14 days is an insane amount of time. Tell him this is not being sold on a traffic basis as there is no traffic. It is being sold as a one word generic domain.

I agree with equity78.
14 days is a lot.

You can kindly tell him that he can assume no traffic for the domain.
I guess it's deal or no deal from then on.

Yep, that would be my take on it. I'd say pay up front, no traffic to speak of, you are buying the keyword, and any potential you can monitize.

Or you could say that you would consider offering him this "test of the domain" for a maximum of 5 days, but only for offers in the $XXXX region.

That should give you some idea if he is serious or not.

Good luck anyway, and keep us informed.

Lol to me this is smelling...crap, I bet at the end of the discussion he knows that you, or anybody else, would be reluctant to point a name for quite half a month, so as an alternative he will ask you to order a 'quick & cheap professional appraisal'... hope I am wrong !

ok- first thanks on all the feedback- now it all makes sense- i cant believe i have never been asked this before- i feel like a dork!

anyways, i wrote him this afternoon and said what equity said- he wrote back and said he felt i was being unreasonable, that 14 days was standard!
so, my last email to him, i referred him to this thread :)

I have heard this recently as well. Becoming more common. Been hearing this more and more from Bodis accounts.

From a buyers view, they just want to make sure if the traffic is true and get a feeling for.

The downside is if the 2 weeks of traffic is not your normal averages, the buyer will probably offer you a lower price. With click fraud and etc I would be willing to do this if a buyer asks me

I basically buy names for the names. Haven't bought traffic as of yet but when I do I may request this if its a few hundred bucks

Good luck. Smash keep us posted on this and outcome. Curious what happens.

Dumb question

Ex. Let's say smash has a high traffic type in name and gets 500 clicks a day and earns 100.00 a day. 20 cents a click avg.

Now that buyer uses that name for 14 days. Ok. Servers being directed to his or his parking company account

In the meantime the buyer is earning 1400 dollars in his account during the 2 weeks

He is not an ethical person and decides to just keep the 1400 bucks to himself and renigs on even tempting to buying the name

Question... Has anyone seen this where they tease the seller, keeps the money and cancels things

How would all this work out? During those 14 days do you say that's pay me based on my past of 1400 up front or half?

I can see a lot of abuse being done by buyers in this and etc.

Guess I am just curious how this would work or pan out.

Then the other question to tie into this which I haven't explored but same thought process some has anyone used www.leasethis.com and lease out the names. Taking this is .tv forum and don't want this deleted let's just say .tv names with lease. Maybe I should form a a dedicated thread in this.

I see buyers abusing the sellers in this and then what??

By doing what buyer wants, it surly complexes things. Maybe say half up front non refundable or something. I don't know.

Off track some but I am curious. PM me if you wish and we can stay focused on this case by smash.
