Hi guys

Received a $50 offer on my domain, I get them all the time and ask the offerer either to increase the price or if they ask for it, I sometimes I give the asking price. I replied with a $2500 asking price, He then increased his offer to $50.01 :D

I tried to explain to him the value of domains and he came back with a huge rant which included this nice idea I liked..

Him: There are so many of you squatters around now, and whether you call yourselves brokers or hotshots or whatever else, you're all ultimately just small-time crooks

Me: We actually call ourselves domain investors but hotshot is cool, I will call myself a hotshot from now on ;)

Hotshots.. does anyone here calls himself a hotshot? I think it's a cool persona. Hotshot Domainer or Domaining Hotshot.

hotshot
an important or exceptionally able person

So now ladies and gentlemen, I, The best domainer of the end-times, am going to call myself a Hotshot Domainer. Deal with it.

What do you guys call yourself by the way?

Thanks

P.S: And oh yeah, you know what he said after my email,
You sound like exactly the kind of guy who should call himself a hotshot

Experienced in Web Development, Web Hosting, Domain Buying, Domain Sales, SEO, Media Buying, Affiliate Marketing etc... so kinda an all around guy. Only thing I don't really touch is logo/graphic design as cheap enough for me not to learn it.

Domain isn't worth what a buyer can pay a domain is worth what the domain is worth and what the "right" buyer can pay. I've said No on quite a few domain offers over the years but that's how I've turned $8 acquistions into 2k, 3k, 6.5k, 7.5k, 16k etc... basically all my sales are pure profit. If 1 out of 5 guys hates me for my pricing that doesn't stop the wire from hitting the bank. Haters gonna hate. If I gotta title myself "Very Profitable" works.

You made a classic mistake that many domainers make. Nobody cares about the "value of domains" no more then you care about the "value of cars" when buying a car. What they care about is how your particlular domain is going to help them. If you are asking $2500 for your domain and a comparable domain is only $500. What makes your name 5x more valuable? Domainers often emphasis things that aren't important to end users.

Yes you are right and I have said that many times that the most important aspect of the domain is how it benefits the buyer. But if spending a few minutes trying to explain why a domain is valuable helps increase the buyer's offer, I won't call it a mistake.

call yourself

"the one who owns the domain you need"
There is a big difference between and want and need. The fact that most domainers only have a 1% sell thru rate is a reminder to always remain humble. The buyer is the one in the position of power not the seller.

Very poor thinking. You cannot be successful if you don't keep yourself in driver's seat.
It's actually the seller who has complete power if the name is of quality.

LOL
I am usually "Owner" or "Sales Representative"
My understanding of Pricing is that it is never objective but mostly relative. Affected by competition, geographical location, season and demand /supply.
I laugh at those who get angry or rant at a Seller over price. Haggle or walk away if the price doesn't suit your budget. If it isn't working between you today, it might tomorrow. There should be know hard feelings.

If this were me, after he said: "you're all ultimately just small-time crooks", he would have received silence from me. My life is way too busy and stressful to purposely allow one more into it.

I guarantee you that people like this person do not refer to others who own real-estate for speculation, investment, enjoyment, etc "crooks" of any level (small-time or large), so why do they do this to domainers?

Jay Leno owns a tremendous amount of antique cars, a few of them are ones that I'd love to have. Does this guy think I should be able to call up Jay and low-ball him an offer for one of those cars AND when he explains the value to me, why its not for sale at the price I offer, call him a "squatter" because he's sitting on cars that he got to before I could?

These people are angry because we thought of a domain name before they did. They're angry at themselves because while we were up at 2am working our butts off trying to think up good investments to CREATE, out of the clear thin air, and then PURCHASE with our own money, they were either out partying or sleeping or just plainly not in the entrepreneurial mindset that we we've been in. Suddenly now, they want our hard-earned work for next to nothing, while they disrespect us with rude accusations and low-ball offers? Equating us to people who belong in jail for having committed some crime that they cant even justify with any good reason?? Screw that and screw them. I, for one, have had enough of those people.

I just stop responding to such people - and no, never once has one of them ever apologized to me and I've had it turn into a sale. They're never going to turn around and say "sorry, I am just kidding, here is my real offer for what you value this domain name to be worth to me".

I have been eyeballing a certain Aston-Martin vehicle but you wont find me walking into a dealer, calling him a squatter for sitting on 20 of them in his lot and offer him an absurdly low offer and only coming up one penny from that offer after he nicely explains to me what the value of such a vehicle is. I'd expect the salesperson to turn around and quietly walk away.

They can eat my static.

Thats a false notion. The person in need of something is never in a position of power or leverage. They might be able to bring themselves into a position to make an offer but if they do not own it, they are behind the eight-ball.

It usually takes a significant amount of some resource to flip the table around - usually that resource is money. Not always, but usually is.

Completely agree with you, even though I think the work domainers (like me) do is nothing compared to people in other professions, that's life and they have to deal with it :D

This guy is talking as of we are doing something shady or illegal!

Using your head to think of a domain name first & having the courage to bet on a domain in an upcoming (or established) industry is work & not some kind of free lunch.

It's like getting mad at some unknown person for winning "my" lottery.

I don't get those types very often, but I would probably say.." I'm sorry you feel that way. Unfortunately I don't have time to teach you about digital real estate, but if you are interested in buying I'm all ears. If not, then we probably have nothing more to discuss. No hard feelings and best of luck. By the way, my counter offer doubles in 48hrs."

I also might have countered at 1 penny lower. :)

What I would have wanted to say is "No, I'm the guy thats quick to pop a can of whoop ass on ya!" :)

The better negotiator is in the position of power....always. The seller sets, raises or lowers the price. That is an advantage from the start. Buyer can only walk away.
