Today in Las Vegas at the Palms Hotel and Casino, Verizon Wireless officially announced their V CAST TV mobile TV service. V CAST TV, which is powered by MediaFLO, runs separately and along side of the existing Verizon data and voice network. This means that V CAST TV does not depend on EV-DO or traditional streaming technologies like Verizon's existing V CAST video content does.
Verizon claims that V CAST TV will offer broadcast quality TV on mobile devices. The company states that viewers will be able to expect nearly the same number of frames per second they experience with conventional TV as well as be able to change channels nearly instantly. V CAST TV handsets will include on-phone programming guides as well as parental controls.
Programming for the V CAST TV network will come from the likes of MTV Networks (MTV, Comedy Central), NBC News, CBS, and Fox.
Verizon is launching the service on two new handsets, the LG VX9400 and the Samsung Mobi. Both devices have dedicated TV access keys and are capable of landscape mod TV viewing. The handsets and V CAST TV service will be available before the end of the first quarter of 2007 in what the company claims will be "most major US markets."
While the company didn't want to get into real specifics on the handset performance, they did go so far as to say that the battery life during TV viewing runs about the same as does talk time. We take that to mean that consumers should be able to expect about 3 hours of TV viewing from a full charge.
Verizon stated that it expects to be selling V CAST TV capable handsets developed by all of their major handset partners by the end of the year. This would seem to suggest that we will eventually see a Motorola V CAST TV mode, and possibly Palm Treo and HTC devices as well.
Verizon has not yet announced pricing for either the V CAST TV service or the two new handsets.
