Fresh news:

Opera Software announced Dec. 21 that it is working with Samsung Electronics to make its mobile Web browser available on Samsung cell phones.

The Opera Mobile browser uses Opera's Small-Screen Rendering technology to reformat Web pages for better viewing on small screens.

"Samsung is a major handset manufacturer so we expect to provide a great number of mobile phone consumers with Opera Mobile to browse all of their favorite Web sites while on the go," Michelle Valdivia Lien, a spokesperson for Opera, told eWEEK.

Opera Mobile includes a blue highlighting feature that allows users to navigate the Web more easily, as well as Web address auto complete, which delivers suggestions to users based on their bookmarks and history, Opera officials said.

"This partnership benefits Samsung phone users with a superior Web experience so that they can easily and quickly access all of their wanted information from their phone," Lien said.

Opera has not yet announced which Samsung handsets Opera Mobile will work with.

Samsung being one of the .mobi sponsors it is definitely good news for those who'd like to see .mobi as a default on mobile phones. :)

Thanks for posting...interesting news.

I wonder if this will have any effect on MOBI or not. Samsung is buying up every MOBI name they can think of. But Opera is against mobi. I don't know.

Another interesting quote:

"Our strategies in working closely across the board with major handset manufacturers, operators and directly with end users have made Opera Mobile an attractive product," says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "We're proud that Opera Mobile is today's choice for Web browsing on the latest Samsung mobile handset because of its winning user experience and form factor adaptation."

Good to hear that big companies work together for the success of the mobile internet.

they will probably force opera to go pro mobi, they have the power to do that and opera might be very happy to acquiesce and do so, making their browser default automatically to .mobi could be a great coup for all involved.

Opera software does NOT like .mobi

Keep that in mind folks.

So the question is, can Samsung change their mind? Or do they even want to change Opera's view on the subject?

This doesn't sound like good news for .mobi to me. Opera software weakens the arguments in favour of .mobi as it formats regular pages for mobile devices.

I was hoping the same.

Opera would never default to .mobi, that would make no sense considering what opera software does.

Samsung easily has the capital to change their minds. They have invested heavily in .mobi, but in the large scheme of things, that's nothing to them.

I'm curious to see where this will go. I agree that it doesnt make any sense whatsoever.

.mobi threatens to put opera out of biz and vice versa i guess samsung is playing both sides of the fence

Who's to say that Samsung won't get a version of the browser on their phones that defaults to .mobi?

Just mere speculation but they have been fairly active in that area of purchasing.

I do know there are open source browsers for mobile that can have plugins written for them to default to mobi if developers so choose.

My opinion -Samsung made a lot of "i" and "mobile" mobi purchases on Sept 26 - who knows -maybe $10-30 K -- that's not a lot of money --

I've purchased hundreds of mobis (50 slated for development) --- so hearing that Samsung may partner with Opera is not real good news for mobi --- after all, Mobi is the enemy to Opera --

we're still on a slippery slope -- at this point, but it's fun --- you just have to realize there might be some sliding and falling before any climbing

like I said before, .mobi will make Opera useless...that's why Mr. Opera is so against it.

It's the other way around. Opera makes .mobi useless as it will take ANY site and convert it for mobile usage instead of having millions of webmasters create new sites and register new domains and even force users to remember new names. Ridiculous to think that $30k from Samsung investing in .mobi names is anything significant. If anything it might be the actual agreement that makes Samsung a "backer".

Please tell me where your source is for this comment that Samsung has heavily invested into .mobi. I have been unable to verify exactly how the 13 mobi backers are actually supporting mobi. So far the only evidence is that microsoft said SOME of their pages will cary the mobi compliant logo (oooo big deal).

I see this as VERY bad news for mobi. Other cell phone makers are sure to use the Opera browser and consider mobi worthless as it's convinced by Opera themselves the worthlessness of the extension. $30k from Samsung is a chump change. It's just hedging their bets because it can't hurt them to have some mobi names that MIGHT have SOME value for them in the future.

My favorite thing recently is seeing names registered in Mobi that are available in .org and .net. Those really make me laugh.

Why? You're missing my point. All I was really saying is that no matter how much they spent on .mobi.. they have enough money (as a company) to change their mind about .mobi in general. It won't hurt them any.

As far as proof.. Like Mobineer said, I know from just seeing the whois records on a bunch of "i" and "mobile" .mobi domains that they own quite a few, and that coupled with reading posts on this and other forums about Samsungs involvement in .mobi domain purchses made me feel safe to say that they had heavily invested in it. $10k-$30k is "heavily" to me.. it's probably nothing to them.

I asked because there has been countless claims about the backers and it's really the sole reason for some of the domainers investments into the extension. Yet there isn't any evidence these backers have committed fully to mobi. There are no press releases. mTLD hasn't told anyone about the contracts or promises by the backers. I find that unsettling to say the least.

Your statement was that THEY invested heavily...which you now admit isn't true at all. If you had invested $30k sure...YOU would be heavily investing. The truth is that Samsung has dabbled in mobi...very different than heavily invested.

Samsung in 2005 was estimated to be worth 77 BILLION... 77,000,000,000...my math isn't even good enough to figure out how low a percentage $30k investment is for them. It's like dropping 3 pennies when you have $7.7 million in your pocket. With almost $8 million in my pocket I would give even the lowest bum 3 cents. It doesn't speak highly of mobi at all.

Sort of gay to argue over something like this, wouldn't you agree? Sorry I used the word "heavily".. it's just what I assumed from what I have read and seen since the beginning of the rollout. I haven't admitted to anything. Do YOU know exactly how much they have spent on .mobi? Please forgive me for being sooo misinformed..... ;)

I only have 3 .mobi's so it's not like I'm sweating this.. I was just interested in the thread.

But, my point is still relevant. What it meant (and probably to most people read as), is that no matter how much money Samsung has spent on .mobi they can easily change their minds and go the other way.

I agree with you. It doesn't sound good for .mobi.
