Two thirds of businesses are unaware they will be able to use their own name in place of domain extensions such as .com, .org, or .net when Internet domains are liberalized next year, according to a survey.

The change would let the likes of Nike or Microsoft control their own domain and better exploit their brands, and also counter cyber-squatters who use variations of brands on the 280 or so existing domain extensions.

And they think there are typo errors now....imagine trying to type some of these coporations with .????

I mean honestly most people don't even use the existing extensions other then .com and there own cctld etc

We are asking lots of folks to relearn how to navigate the internet and well honestly thats just not cool to many folks. I have grandparents that are just now venturing onto the internet and only know of .com ...

So in essence lets keep folks confused so we can bankroll some more money off chump corporations and big businesses! and lets Sh!t on the small guys who won't be able to afford this..........RIGHT???!???

I really am not sure how well this would take off - as others said, it'd just generate more typos and all IMO.

Plus what would the domain part be "Nike.nike"? "Shop.nike"? "Buy.nike"?

Ah well, we'll see how it goes!

It's too easy to develop a site that competes with major corporations. I'm not quite sure what it is, but there is a conspiracy somewhere in this $100,000+ make your own TLD plan that helps THE MAN to change that.

I'm thinking this could eventually move the preferred internet address away from keyword.TLD and just go to keyword only. No need for Nike.Nike or index.Nike when entering "Nike" will take you right to their site. Of course not everyone will be able to afford it, but that would be the point.

What about extensions like .blog or .shop? For example seo.blog or laptop.shop are really good.

I'm on the fence about this whole thing.

Thats kinda what I was thinking. Instead of typing ebay.com we would just type ebay and press enter, then perhaps the main ebay site would have a web tree showing all the subdomains of ebay.

What about extensions like .blog or .shop? For example seo.blog or laptop.shop are really good.

That's a good question and Im not too sure about that one.

It's nothing more than ICANN being greedy.

Yep. Like a commenter on Domain Name Wire said a couple days ago, I really have a feeling some people at ICANN are being "paid" to ahead with the release of these new extensions, and I don't just mean bonuses if you know what I mean :|

That's what I can't understand. I'm honestly not sure who will make more here -- ICANN or the phishers who are going to register ebay.store or ebay.support, etc and scam the living hell out of people who don't realize it's not ebay emailing them. :td:

Sure you understand.
ICANN do not care about anything or anyone else other than their bottom line profits.
I honestly hope not even single entity fall for this crappy so called extensions and waste their money.
But, that's not how greed work :(

That sounds about right.

I made a blog post about this.
I sincerely couldn't care less, but I do believe that eveyone on both sides should be honest.

Premium gTLD domain holders are worried that the values of their existing web properties will be diminished, while ICANN, theoretically a non-profit, is doing this for money.

Both sides hijack marginally related issues- trademark infringement and commercially viable, succinct name availability- to mask their real motives. Profit on one side, profit on the other.
