.tv The Normality of .TV

There used to be a time when one of the criticisms of .tv was that 'nobody had even heard of it'.

Watching TV last night I realised how massively things have changed.

In the UK, Saturday night is 'owned' by the ITV network - which essentially comprises ITV in England, Ulster TV in Northern Ireland and Scottish TV in Scotland.

They have all the 'big' shows lined up for Saturday Night and Sunday night - one of which is The X-Factor

While watching a bit of the show last night I notice that they send viewers to one of the three websites for each of the TV companies that make up the ITV Network (Who run the show) - ITV goes to ITV.com but the other two go to U.tv and STV.tv

TWO of the three websites being put on front of tens of millions of people and the networks are happy to use the .TV

Plus almost a quarter of all ads with a web address on UK television now use websites with a .tv ending

This doesn't make .TV any more valuable - but is a statement of the reality/validity/growth of .tv names

Ha...

Everyone knows that .TV is not normal.. or am I mixing up the people that own .TV with the extension?

Heavy rotation right now? PostSeason.TV

Apparently baseball likes it.

The main TV channel in Russia is "The 1st channel". It's the most popular tv channel among Russian speaking people in the world. It's a huge media group.
Here is the list of websites that group have:
www.1tvrus.com
www.domkino.tv
www.muz1.tv
www.vremya.tv
www.telecafe.ru
www.karusel-tv.ru

Second largest TV channel in Russia is Channel Rossiya (Russia),
a part of monstrous state VGTRK media holding
their main site is Russia.TV

..they also actively use
Russia2.tv and BestRussia.tv

While I haven't yet noticed much usage of .TV on US programming in English, I have noticed its usage on Spanish programming such as Telemundo and Univision.

I suppose it is a good sign to hear of .TV adoption in England. The only problem is the English don't know how to spell :)

So, EllenTV. com why not Ellen. TV?

I cannot figure why .TV is not more popular in the US.

Because .tv is actively surpressed by the likes of Sedo which leads folks in the US to think that .tv's are not popular. Sedo rejects numerous auction entry applications for .tv's with great keywords quoting "Quality requirements not met = The domain does not sufficiently fulfill the quality criteria necessary for the auction event." This is absolute BS and IMO is a big factor in why there is less recognition and use of the extension in the US.

Yes I have noticed this for sometime now. In the UK .tv is gaining popularity and most people I personally know have heard of .tv, which is why I am happy to own UK based terms like Telesales.tv. :imho:

Yes, Len, Sedo are not leading the charge with the .tv extension, in fact like you say are doing it alot of harm.

I no longer submit to Sedo anymore and I am talking single generics. Sedo are loosing all credibility with me now.

Hopefully Godaddy will up the ante one day.

I totally agree with you Jimbo, that the .tv extension is on the television more and more.

Hopefully .tv will be a top extension in the next 5 years

BJ :)

Note there are some .TVs in the Traffic Auction. So far many have been passed on but the following did sell:

RealityShows.tv $500
Insults.tv $100

I once had an analyst who worked for me and after reviewing a memo of his, I mentioned a couple of words he needed to correct the spelling on. His response was, "In England that's how we spell it."

Yes, Len, Sedo are not leading the charge with the .tv extension, in fact like you say are doing it alot of harm.

guys, be serious. the success of .tv to capture a space in the public mind has virtually nothing to do with sedo auctions. maybe it has a little more to do with whether you'll be able to flip your .tv portfolios, if thats what you mean by "harm".

if sedo wont place most .tv names its becasue in their experience these names do not sell for what they need to sell for in order to deserve the premium space. you may think that "if only sedo would list us then our names would sell for more" but in this case thinking does not make it so. sedo is hardly the only place for auctions but when names are offered on gd or namejet what do they sell for? not much usually. i know 'cause i've sold (or tried) to sell a bunch and its tough to get even a $100 bid. of course thats a lot more than what people will pay on the threads here. i could just as easily say its because np'rs wont pay top dollar in the sales threads that .tv is failing but i'd be just as wrong.

yes .tv's are being used all over the world. they do make great brands. so why arnt they more valuable to domainers? becasue there's still virtually no traffic. once there's traffic then you'll see prices ratchet up and stay up. until them its just going to be the same sequence of rolling boom-to-bust cycles its always been.

how long will that take? i used to think it was only going to be a couple years. now i'm not sure it will ever happen. the dynamics of the web are changing and type-in is diminishing, not increasing. add to that that so many great .tv names are being held by domainers looking to score, and until they are sold to an enduser will never become an attractive target for users, you can see that the chances of the public regularly using the .tv extension as a search tool are slim.
