Spanish .TV names, are they worth registering? Has there been any decent sales of them?

Mexicana.tv

I had a $3,000 deal for Mexicana.tv about a month ago, on www.Sedo.com . The deal was in escrow, but the the buyer backed out of the deal. He said he was buying this name for a client, but "his lawyer advised him not to buy this name , since it was in the courts in a dispute". Of course, this was all bull, and just an excuse. My rep at Sedo agreed, and said I could take him to court for breaking the deal. I didn't fight it. I will just hang on to it. Of course the "deal in court", was referring to Mexicana Airlines, but they aren't the only Mexicana around. :cy:

This post is re: the previously mentioned size of the Spanish economy. This is from the World Bank and I stopped at 40. Roughly estimate the total GDP from all countries in this list that speak English vs Spanish (whether 1st or second). Of course adjustments should be made based on the word (e.g. overlap w/portugese, colloquial, regional differences, etc...)

English may not have the most "native" speakers, but it has become the modern linga Franca. English is now taught in schools not only in India now, but also in China, Russia, Japan, etc...

The number of people who read and understand English is several fold higher than for Spanish. Moreover, there is more uniformity in English. Many of the speakers of English as a second language learn it starting in elemetary school and are as fluent in written English as native speakers. These English speakers are also much more likely to be affluent with money and access to the internet. This is true from South America to Europe to Asia. If English names/words are compared, realistically I would value Spanish words at 1/5 the value of English terms.

Out of curiosity, how are you coming up with the 1/5 value? I understand there is a delay in the general acceptance of the foreign market, but there has been growing exposure in the aftermarket for Spanish names.

The problem here is that Mexicana holds a lot of trademarks. I saw it last week when going to register a "Mexico" related trademark. PM sent.

I agree that 1/5 could not be generalized. There are names that could be closer to 1/1 and names that are 1/1000, depending on the niche, the economical, social, even educational level of the end user.

I could put some numbers to this if you like. My estimate may be off, we could see.

I think it this can be generalized for obvious reasons. Of course there will be exceptions and probably lots of them and I gave such a caveate in my orig. post. It's actually a good thing for domainers. The reflection of name value would map to a smaller but similar basic structure with areas highly distorted by specific differences in culture, history, perception, etc... These are the places where the ratio of value might exceed 1:1 (in favor of the spanish, as Ammu's examples illustrate). These distortions are exactly the kind that create opportunities for those people with high levels of specific knowledge in the right area to profit handsomely (IMHO).

Thanks for the analysis. Do you hold any Spanish .tv's? As a lot of the folks have mentioned, development is huge. Either that or generating some revenue to either break even or realize margin. As the space continues to build more interest, these long term holds will be gems in today's market if you can obtain them for reasonable prices (straight reg and/or aftermarket).

One of team members has some spanish domains is considering the purchase of more. He speaks little Spanish, but his girlfriend is Mexican (so we'll see how this all works out ) His ME.TV channel www.latinocentral.tv is one of CarsonDaly's favorite channels and is one of the most popular sites on me.tv, but he'd like to develop it into a more general topic latino site.

I hope you don't take my guestimate too seriously. It's just 2min analysis mostly on my gut. I was suprised to see Spains economy knocking on the top 10 spot. I would like a more in-depth look at this question.

The metric I posted above is a good starting point for guestimation but I include much more detail. I'm sure there is a threshold level in income and education for a) computer owernership and b) internet usage. One has to be able to afford a computer and be literate to be a consumer on the internet these days.* I would use the same method to find this for all people who are first-language Spanish speakers and those who use it as their primary lingua franca. And do the same for English. I would multiply by the median** income because those are the dollars you're after.

I would use this as a better estimator of the relative value, considering the US market as an indicator leading the Spanish market by (? 2 years ?, better to map this trend over last 10 years and try to find corresponding points).

Again, specific market info is indispensible in the actual valuation of a name.

The truth is the Spanish market may be a BETTER place to invest in domains b/c of less capital chasing the best names in that market, but a realistic relative valuation could serve as a useful rule of thumb.

*Although .TV could change both of these, it can't rely on that change as a prerequesite for valuation (IMO). In other words, .TV has to take off before the poor and illiterate see comercials on it, which seems several years away). I considered adding a CC b/c most internet rev. is based on direct sales to the end user, but advertisements is a notable and increasing exception.

**Median b/c millionaires don't spend thousands a year on toilet paper, their wealth is invested in stocks, bonds, heavy machinery and domain names .

Great information! Don't worry about taking the analysis too seriously. It's good to see the various aspects of where the market has taken place. I do agree about the income, demographics and other variables in dealing with an audience that is gradually growing to the exposure of the Internet and/or TV.

In terms of the .com world, one of the biggest developers and income generators was Chris Chena. One of the concerns folks have seen with Spanish .com's is that they are parked. How much traffic and revenue are they really generating? Does this really add value to the name? If the .com's are parked, how can we expect anything out of other tLD's and/or cctld's?

There is also a relatively new Spanish domainers forum, which has a lot of conversation about .TV and its explosion. We shall see as folks seem to be using their native language and knowledge of their niche to utilize any potential market opportunity.

I do agree that the Spanish market is a few years away since the English market is just starting to gain visibility and acceptance in the .TV world. Although it's an older extension, we see the convergence more.

In any case, just a few thoughts.

.TV is such a perfect fit for spanish domain names. Its a universal extension which can reach and be marketed to the entire spanish speaking community across dozens of countries. IMO this may be more important in spanish than english since there are so many more spanish speaking countries (and thus so many different tlds).
