I’ve heard a lot of people in the industry talk about Domainers building websites and that they should just focus on investing in Domains & not build them. Doesn’t matter if they build it themselves or someone builds it for the Personally I think Domainers should build their own website.

I’ll tell you why.

The only Issue that I would have a Domainer building a website is if it is an Gem of a Domain the only thing is though if it made no income or very little when its built it could hurt the selling price......

It really depends on the domainer and the name. If you want to build out part of your inventory to create long term income, I think it is a good idea.

Most end users that see a site built are not going to make an offer. If your goal is selling the domain, better to have a sales lander.

This is what many domainers are doing, mainly on keyword domains or EMD's (Exact Match Domains)!

You should if you can. It can add value to the domain name and may even protect it from udrp if developed (and clearly not infringing on trademarks).

From a sales perspective, it will be harder to sell because end-users may avoid making offers on a domain with a site on it. However, if you use a broker or outreach, you may be able to negotiate a higher price for it.

No.

This may dissuade interested parties from making offers, because they might think a business is already using the domain.

Having said that, there may be a way to build a site for seo and still let visitors know the domain can be purchased.

I prefer not to build a site...

Or it may make interested parties make a very high offer knowing full well you have a site on it. It all depends really.

If you have a EMD domain and can do solid SEO and get lots of organic traffic in a niche that you can sell things on there be it ads direct or via adsense etc. and or be an affiliate to something, try it.

Also keep in mind it is sometimes easier to sell a EMD that already has organic traffic + possible income even a little income than it is to sell just the domain.

There is no one answer that fits all in domaining.

If it's a name that you have knowledge/interest in and wouldn't mind running a business on it then give it a shot. If development is being done strictly just for development and you have no interest in the category then I'd pass as you'll lose interest and easier to sell a domain that says it's for sale. So I develop things I have an interest in or am knowledgeable on, have tried things I had no clue on and learned in the process but usually get bored with them or an uphill battle.

So it's usually not a question of does a domain deserve development it's a question of are you the right person to develop it or would it do better in the hands of someone more knowledgeable on the subject. Develop what ya know and sell the ones where development wouldn't be easy for ya to achieve success as having a killer domain doesn't make you a killer developer.

I think that develop a site with serious content, and adding regularly new contents, is a tough task: time consuming and not for all.

Instead, a simple landing page with a description of the domain name, Contacts, and highlighted Domain for sale could be an added value.

It's a completely different business model and requires extensive resources. There isn't a right or wrong way to do it. If someone spends time building their websites that's time they could be spending working on finding domains/buyers. I specialize in lead generation and am not nearly as good as most guys on selling domains so I typically just build the sites and if offers come in it's just a bonus.
