It depends on the use. Long domains are fine if they are competitive keywords.

It depends :) If a one-word domain is highly competitive with millions of results you may find it difficult to position the site in the search rankings for that word. However, a one-word domain might still give you a boost in longer-tail terms which include that word. A two to three-word domain which is a search phrase might still generate good results because the phrase is far less competitive. While many factors affect ranking, it appears that .com/.net seem to rank better than .tv in the US. Search rankings do seem to vary by country however as one of my .TV sites receives consistent traffic from several Spanish-speaking countries even though it is on page 11 of Google in the US for the domain's keywords.

Examples:
-two exercise-related sites of mine are highly-searched phrases and actually two-word domains but the competition is intense with millions of results so while they have a fair amount of content, traffic has been disappointing; one is on about page 30 of Google (of 2 million results) and the other I have no idea...

-another site has very little textual content (mostly videos) but is a three-word domain with less competition and the site appears on the first or second page of Google for several searched phrases; considering my lack of knowledge of the subject (women's dresses) and scarce content the site is generating OK traffic given the effort put into it

-another site - a one-word domain with modest competition is only on page six of Google for that word but receives traffic for dozens of longer-tail terms which include that one word; not bad for a site less than two months old

small domain is always prefered, but it should be easy to remember. But if you are going to make a site on some specific topic then you can buy a long domain name with keyword in it. Like you want a site on wordpress themes. Then you can buy the freewordpressthemes com bcoz you are getting the specific group of people so they will remember you site easily.

Ahhhh sure... but in the process Stay away from a Trademarked Term in your domain name.

A better example would be. If you are offering website themes, to have the term THEME or THEMES in your domain name. If you offer website themes, it's best to match the term to what you offer exactly to what people already search for on the net. This is called, Natural Branding. WebsiteThemes.com . Then you can go second tier fitting to your budget and down the line if WebsiteThemes.com is being used or can not be purchased etc.

WebsiteThemes.com
WebsiteThemes.net
NewWebsiteThemes.com
DiscountWebsiteThemes.com
FreeWebsiteThemes.com

You can also build a brand and use a name you have come up with and use advertising and SEO to help.

The shorter the better. One should try to adhere to the 14-character rule of domains when possible.

In general I agree that there is no point making a domain unnecessarily long. However, there are certain terms that are in high demand that just break the rule.

If you are using a "brandable" and relying on building a brand then in general you don't want a really long domain.

However some category killer terms with massive competition are just long. Terms like -

"Construction Management" - 22 Letters
"Mortgage Refinance" - 17 Letters
"Conflict Resolution"- 18 Letter
"Credit Card Processing" - 20 Letters

There are benefits to keywords like that with high search volume, advertisers, PPC bids, and SEO outside of building a brand.
