the .TV experience - my mistakes and my strategy adjustements

Hello all,

I just wanted to share my experience with .TV since I've been in this market for a couple years now. Hopefully this post will be helpful to somebody, as the members of this forum have always been helpful to me.

I became interested in .TV a few years back (sometime before the relaunch) because it seemed to be a very good fit to video media and at the time I was working in the Streaming Media industry. Every day I was at the forefront of video streaming technology and I my mind was deep into that market and where it was going. There was no doubt in my mind then, as there is no doubt in my mind now, that this extension fits as a very powerful symbol that is internationally understood as television, the video medium. So, I invested my time, money quite a bit of energy researching, speculating, reading buying and soaking it all in. I purchased a number of .tv domain names ranging from premium to what was i thinking ?.

In the hype of it all, it is very easy to bite off more than you can chew as many speculators have realized. Personally, I made a few more purchases than I really needed to and overall spent more than I probably should have on .tv names. Dont get me wrong, I am very happy with my portfolio of names and I did not spent more than I have a budget for, but I just wanted to put it out there that one should be careful not to get too crazy and stay within your budget.

Over the past couple years, I have become a bit dissilusioned with the .TV market since it has been a rocky road, but I have never really lost faith that this extension has true potential. The marketing and pricing behind .tv has been confusing at best, annoying many investors/hobbiests and casting a considerable amount of doubt in the aftermarket, but the bottom line has always remained constant - the term TV is extremely marketable. this is the only factor that is giving this market momentum.

The use of .tv is increasing without doubt, and I see more and more media companies using .tv sites (tnt.tv wfn.tv lmn.tv movienetwork.tv es.tv). To this day I often find a local media network on tv using .tv such as telequebec.tv when I am in quebec and we see things like the emmys using emmys.tv.

having said all this, it is still not easy to turn .tv investing into a profit. There are many pitfalls and false goldmines along the way and you have to be very careful with your money since they are considerably more expensive than some other tlds.

I have made mistakes investing in .tv names:

1. I invested in too many names before enough research and understanding the market
2. I have missed other domain opportunites by being too focused on .tv
3. I regret not having purchased some great tv domains in the aftermarket when they were for sale

Things I did right:

1. I purchased some very high quality and higly marketable names for reg fee
2. I purchased some aftermarket gems
3. I sold a number of my domains at fair prices to keep my budget balanced.

I think of .tv investing as a longer term investment since the market has a lot of catching up to do. But if you are heavily focused on .tv, you may forget that there are some other thriving makrets in domaining which can pay in shorterm. This is exactly how I am adjusting my domain name attitude, and I think many of us here can benifit from this sort of adjustment, and many others already use this strategy.

The point I am trying to make is that .tv names should be part of a well balanced domain strategy rather being your main focus or only area of interest. If you look at some country codes such as our beloved Canadian .ca and you will find that there are great opportunities and name availability in some higly recognizable Contry Codes is amazing, so keep your heads up!
My strategy now is focusing locally with .ca and globaly with .com while using .tv and .la as a strong compliment to my network. After all, a great name is a great name :)

This is good reading for anyone involved in domaining, not just those in the .tv market. Your number one mistake:

1. I invested in too many names before enough research and understanding the market

I think this is a common problem for many people, people who buy on impulse without taking the time to think it over. There's always so much hype about "buy it now" before someone else grabs up this great deal that it's tempting to say yes before you realize that the "great deal" isn't all that great.
