In chat, we've been testing out a new set of rules on Fridays to allow selling ("Casual Fridays"): More details.

Please let us know whether we should:
  1. Only allow selling in chat on Fridays like we have been doing.
  2. Extend selling in chat to the entire weekend.
  3. Allow selling every other day in chat.
  4. Always (24/7) selling in chat.
  5. Never allow selling in chat.
  6. Other (explain in a post)

Thanks in advance!

I heard a complaint a while back about there being no end users here...i think it wouldnt work out so great unless you have to pay to post ,reason i say that is we cant all be in one room buying and selling people would see the buying price and what it sold for right? So end user room seperate from buy chat room i think would help aand make sales easier and end buyers at par with resellers/sellers. Thank you

Well, the chat needs to re-establish itself as a point for discussion. That's the only way to bring end-users and various types of resellers.

yeah seperate room and you have to pay to be in it to sell but not to buy so end users dont go in and see the behind the scenes

My vote always and if it doesn't work out it can be dropped... No harm in trying something new as always good to have extra options...

It could be great for liquidating domains for quick cash sales...

I have never bought a domain from chat only PM :)

Sales chat and non-sales chat are two different things, and a mixed chat room won't work as well as two separate rooms would. The two require different approach, different attitudes, different rules.

I.E.
  • Non-sales chat = relax, unwind
  • Sales chat = business, serious

It's not even ideal having a split in the same chat room, ie "Sales for X hours on Y days, non-sales all other times", as outlined below.

ONE CHAT ROOM

If this is kept to one chat room, whether Friday only or multiple days and times throughout the week:
  1. There are times where each chat room is closed to allow the other one to be open, chat should be available 24/7
  2. When the "sales" period begins, many will have been waiting all week/all day to post their names, which at one time could mean too many being posted in the small window to make it useful
  3. The two chat room types (sales/non-sales) are fighting for prime time slots, and yet it's ideal for both to have them
  4. It's not ideal chatting away about anything one minute and the next you're forced into a sales environment and your conversation cut short (which could be useful or important)
  5. It's not ideal if sales are being discussed and the "sales period/window" is over and chat returns to non-sales chat

SUGGEST TWO ROOMS

NON-SALES CHAT
  • Relaxed discussions about any topic
  • No need to worry about joking one minute then the next trying to sell a domain name and appear business like and serious
  • No sales of any kind, or promotions, or links to threads or sales-chat room offers etc
  • Chat and banter can take place all day everyday without interruptions, at a time/day convenient to each user
SALES CHAT
  • Official and serious sales discussions, no place for "Hey did you see that video the other day - [youtube_link]"
  • Discussions only to be about sales, prices, offers, which registrar, length of ownership, etc
  • Heavily moderated with stricter rules to stop people over promoting their domains, etc
  • Serious sales can take place all day everyday without interruptions, at a time/day convenient to each user

I'm sure both rooms would be busy enough to warrant it.

I don't see any real advantages to using only one chat room, other than costs/dev time etc. Seems everything points to it being a bad idea and two rooms being much more suitable.

I know two chat rooms is more work (dev, upkeep, moderating, etc) but I think two different chat rooms is the sane solution to make it manageable for differences in rules/moderation, and more structured and purposeful places to cater for different needs.

Hi Eric,
I hope you remember Rami's fundraising Chat sales
Is there any chance to bring such chat auctions ?

  • A mod can auction the names.
  • User can submit upto 3 names for an event - $1 Reserve auction
  • Weekly auction

and similar thing for fixed price sale

Scheduled live auctions is a great way to go. (No reserve)
There should be a limit in how many Domains can be auctioned per seller.

That auction for Rami attracted many buyers including myself.

ok free for all and so how are you going to keep spammers and scams.at bay? its asinine to make two rooms that are all open to public.I dont want it that way,but if it keeps me safer to sell i wouldnt mind a small fee charged 1$ or something it wont tottaly stop scams but it willl help as oppose to doing nothing at all about it.

A separated chat for sales only

A separate chat for selling domains. Can make requests for WTB domains too.

I disagree. It's always difficult to get critical mass in a chat room and various other domain forums have failed to keep their chat rooms well attended. NamePros has a excellent set up which means the chat is open in many different pages and that really helps keep it busy and draw people in but there are STILL quiet periods.

By splitting into two chat rooms, you will immediately dilute this critical mass and one room will basically become a place for newbie domain spam, the other will just be less attended. In my view, it would be better to:

(a) Leave things as they are or;

(b) Allow selling on 2 days (just weekends, which also helps boost weekend chat numbers) or even 3 days like Friday, Saturday & Sunday or;

(c) ALWAYS allow selling in the chat room but just limit how often a domain thread or any URL can be posted or something similar along these lines. Perhaps if any URL (including domain threads) can be posted only once every (for example) 2 hours or so it will break the monotony and people will be more selective in their choices. Just posting a Domain Name isnt much of a disturbance compared with an entire thread url.

However, knowing domainers as I do, im sure there will those sitting with an alarm clock ready to alert them when the 2 hours is up so they can post again.

Anyway, its just an idea!

At this point i believe all week is the best with the rule that it cannot interrupt discussions that are in session. (keeping the 15 min rule should be sufficient. There will still be the need for a moderator to step in from time to time of course. allocating 1-2 "Chat Moderators" for this wouldn't hurt.

From an administrative perspective, I say either all or none--anything else isn't really enforceable. There's no way to communicate the exact schedule to all participants, especially when we're distributed across many timezones. We could have an indicator that appears in chat to notify participants of the rules for the current point in time, but that's still not going to be as effective as a consistent rule.

For me, I would like to have 2 chats 24/7: a sales chat and a non-sales chat. Timezone won't be an issue. Sales chat however would have to be moderated by one or two to prevent spamming. If it doesn't work, then revisions or modifications need to be done later. After all, nothing is perfect but somehow we'll try to achieve what is best for each and everyone.

We were able to sell in chat for years without issues.

But frankly why would you limit the exposure your sale got to the people available in chat? Never any good came from it. Crap names at crap prices.

People talking about end-users in chat, are bonkers. No end-users on Namepros and thank god for that. You want End-users bidding up your steals?

Integrate an IRC network for namepros, that way there can be multiple channels for different chat subjects including sales.

  1. Extend selling in chat to the entire weekend because first - namespros is good platform to learn domain name field fast . second thing - sell domain name post generate question and question generate information and information generate traffic and traffic generate client and client generate opportunity, opportunity generate hope and hope generate feeling and feeling generate ideas and ideas generate curiosity and curiosity generate growth . so please allow domain name sell option for all days.

this is domain name portal and we all here to exchange domain name knowledge and sales.
what else important than domain for us. so why another sell chat required. admin should need to allow to post domain name sell ads everyday and make sure there no one talk other thing exempt domain name. this is useful site to learn about domain name field . this is not social platform to talk on like and unlike other thing exempt domain

I seem to recall that years ago NP used to run auctions in chat. If I remember correctly the names would be submitted to NP and the auction would take place, these were well attended by members.

Perhaps something similar could be tried again. Perhaps the number of names permitted by member could be limited, say 2 individual names or one portfolio of domains to be auctioned as one lot. Those that submit domains could talk 'fairly' openly in chat prior to the auction that there names are included.

The auctions could be themed according to domains being auctioned. The auctions possibly could be weekly to start with and then perhaps specialist / themed auctions could also be inserted the schedule. Perhaps Friday evenings would be good, with perhaps the specialist / themed auctions occuring on Tuesday evenings.

NP could make a small charge for entering domains to cover running the auctions.

Anyway just my 2 penny worth.
