Registerfly transfer problems! Locking domains for no reason and messing with whois!!

I initiated a domain transfer from registerfly to godaddy for one of my domains last week but it's been nothing but trouble.

When I started the transfer, godaddy was sending the authorization email to the wrong address when I realized that registerfly unknowingly replaced all my whois with their contact info. After logging into my account and updating my contact and making sure my domain was UNLOCKED, the whois database still showed registerfly's contact under admin, billing, registrar, etc... After an email to support, the problem was fixed and I figured everything would go smoothly.

Around this time, I also setup a domain transfer from tucows to godaddy.

Well a few days later the tucows to godaddy domain transfer was successful
however the registerfly to godaddy transfer was still pending.

So I sent registerfly an email to inqure how long it would take them to approve my transfer. And here's where thing's get worse.

Even though they have "rapid email response", "24/7" support and a live chat (that never seems to be online btw) i get a response 4 days later, NO email confirmation of my ticket (luckily I logged in today to check the status) with a sentence asking me if I was 'transferring away or to registerfly and what was the domain name'! What???? I only have 1 domain with them and even told them to reference my last ticket which already explained I was transferring away from them. And on top of that my ticket was CLOSED not giving me a chance to reply, prompting me to once again open another ticket and wait for a valid response.

And it doesn't stop there. When I clicked on my domain in my account the status is now mysteriously LOCKED! It was unlocked last week but they've locked it now without my permission. Are registrars allowed to even do that and will this effect my transfer? When I click on unlock it does nothing and stays LOCKED.

Is the domain within the 60 day grace? If so it won't go anywhere. Also if you select the private whois then that means their information will show and not yours.

There are so many problems reported recently with regfly that I would recommend to a buyer not paying for a purchased domain until after transfer has been completed to another registrar. Sellers with regfly portfolios might want to note this trend, particularly when regging their latest 'bargains'. Regfly currently has the rep of being quite unstable, but still has an army of fans....

While my experiences with Regfly have been good, I've had a nasty bout with GD within the last 3 weeks and due to their incompetence and redtape I've lost out on a domain valued x,xxx. I am now determined to swing all of my business to Moniker, whose reputation for customer service is much better. (I'm not taking anymore chances of losing out on x,xxx profit) If transferring domains, I'd recommend Moniker as your new registrar.

I have one domain regged with Regfly (I bought it and that's where it was originally regged.) Have no problems but then again I haven't tried to transfer out. Mostly all of my other domains are with GD.

Fonzie, can you tell us more what happened? It has me worried, thanks.

fonzie: Thanks for the info. I just sent regfly a PM and will report back with his reply.

Namemogul: Nope the domain is not in the grace period. It's been sitting in my account for well over a year so it should definitely be transferable.

yoshiwara: agreed. I have been a customer of registerfly for a long time and had at one point all my domains registered with them but their faltering customer support has really discouraged me from continuing to do business with them.

kerrijo: Have you updated your contact lately? Can you tell me if it shows up correctly in the whois search or is your info replaced with registerfly's?

Anyways thanks for the help. I'll update the thread hopefully with some postive news, and hopefully some explanation why they locked the domain.

Regarding my words about GD, I don't want to disclose the domain I lost or the exact details, but all I'm going to say is that the person I was trying to buy it from forgot their login details at GD. (The domain was registered quite a few years ago and this was the only domain in that account). Even though the person was a good customer of GD and had another account there (with many more domains), GD refused to transfer the domain into the other account.

Ok regfly replied to me and told me the domain was locked because it was pending transfer... Ironically, as I logged into my registerfly account the domain is now gone - a log into godaddy shows the domain is still pending transfer but whois database shows the "sponsoring registrar" as godaddy. Glad that registerfly has a contact here which responded to my concerns in minutes rather than days.

Sorry to hear about your problems with Regfly. But I would seriously advise against moving to Godaddy. Go with Namecheap.com or possibly Moniker as Fonzie said. Can't comment on Moniker myself as I have never used them but I swear by Namecheap.

Peter: Could you share your particular experience with godaddy? I've used them before but never really had a problem. Support was always quick and helpful. Just renewed a domain for several years with them and already transferred a couple of my domains over to them a few weeks ago.

I've always used Namecheap for my own registrations and only have a Godaddy account for when I buy domains and people free push to my Godaddy account. Needless to say that my brief encounters with Godaddy have put me off ever using them or recommending them to anyone.

From my experience no problems transferring out of regfly but check the whois (and unlock the name of course :hehe: ) before you initiate the transfer. For some reason the whois is sometimes screwed up and shows regfly default profile info instead :o

Don't you think the title of your post was just a little out of line?
Honestly? Perhaps "Registerfly transfer problems; Anyone able to help/advise?" would have made more sense.
That's all, Thread closed.
