My site is 3 weeks old and currently im on the 9th Google search page result for google seearching within australia. However i am not in the first 40 + pages in google.com for my keyword.

But my competitor whos no.1 position ranks no.1 for that keyword on both international google and google australia.

The total results for the keyword is about 1.25million so not extremely competitive

any ideas ?

Localized searches are easier to get highly ranked in hence why you are on the 9th page of the Google results but nowhere to be seen in the .com results.

Ensure that your sites are optimized for the keywords that you wish to be highly ranked in. Making sure the content is still pleasing to the reader. This includes optimizing the meta tags.

Get yourself listed on some of the major directories such as DMOZ and Yahoo.

Start a linking campaign ultimately trying to get your site linked from others without giving a link back. However if someone wants an exchange instead and they have a valuable site/resource that is related in subject matter to your own then consider it but do not accept too many link exchanges.

Make sure that some of your keywords are used as the text for the links as this will help considerably.

Compare your site and site of well-performing competitor. What is the difference in page titles, site description and keywords? How about keyword density and prominence on your site? Do you have comparable volume of content? It`s easiest way just to learn and copy a bit in case their seo works well :)

However - during first month or two you may be in a so called "sandbox" stadium for Google. To take good position in a short period you must have prominent backlinks from sites with high PR. And like advised in previous post - make sure the anchor texts of inlinks include your important keywords.

Thanks John,

Yeah I've been closely watching my competitors website regarding keywords and density. I think I've pretty much got SEO on par with my competitor the only advantage my competitor has is 600+ Backlinks compared to my 62 BL's however many of my competitors BL's are not related and a large majority seem to be coming from a single web directory which looks like an SEO companies directory.

I think I might be able to do better!

:D

Then just build links and wait. You can try to have 2 links from Dmoz - submit your site to local and another to appropriate global category. Make anchor a bit different. If you can manage it, these links could overweight 600+ "regular" links :)

Although some of the links are unrelated they can still make a difference.

For example say you have 2 site that are on an even keel. 1 has 300 targeted links and the other has 300 targeted links and 300 non targeted. The site with the extra non targeted links will rank 1st. Non targeted links have a much smaller impact but they do have an impact.

Keep working away at your back links and you should do fine. Under no circumstances build up a lot of backlinks in a small space of time then stop. Try to keep building backlinks at a regular pace. It is widely reported that Google give lower consideration or even flag links that are obtained in a short space of time if the momentum is not maintained.

Yeah I'm going to start doing a lot more backlinking after exams are over. I've submitted my site to DMOZ international I think but I am not sure what you mean by appropriate global category, like the Australian DMOZ? If so, link?

If you have already submitted to international, just follow "regional" tree and find Australia + subcategory that is appropriate for your site. I must note that double entry isn`t allowed by Dmoz rules, so you have risk to be penalized. But many sites have managed two listings and it could be a big advantage.

If you want to make your life bit easier focus on .com version of google first try to achieve good rankings on it. Also get lots of backlinks from the site which are displayed when you search for your keyword in your local version of google.

Thanks.

Hey Nick how can you focus on .com version of google? How does Google bot workout the placement in local and international search engine results.

Also my website is selling a product, I think it will be very difficult getting back links from local competitors however, overseas competitors in the related field might do it.

Thanks

From focusing on .com version I was just referring to the techniques that are used to get a better ranking on the search engines.

For local competitors not giving you links you can even get good positions from other international competitors who are dealing in their local market and you are not even going to compete them but yes it is still a relevant link.
