Old Name/New Name?

I see threads where the buyer wants a domain thats 'x' years old, like the buyer that wants a travel name at least 3 years old. What's the significance of age to the value of a domain name? I deal with brandables and a great name is a great name... must be a traffic thing?

the older they are the more likely the search engine would rank it better.

Another reason is that old domains add a layer of credibility (give the impression that the company behind it has been operating for some time). It's the same principle as off the shelf companies.
