Just stumbled across a name that is exactly the same as the name of a movie (about 10 years old), is it safe to own it from the legal perspective?

Personally, I try to avoid anything that even hints at the possibility of having potential legal issues.

Maybe you should also be asking why the domain is still available.

Are you thinkng of creating a fan site? Is the movie is still massively popular? Or does it have a small but rabid cult following?

If not a fan site...Who would find value in the domain? Why would anyone be interested in acquiring the domain? What sort of value would you/they place on the domain -- and why?

My apology that I can't make it exactly clear what the name is as I am still interested in purchasing it. Interestingly enough, the said domain name was NOT owned by the production house per se.

As examples, I can see "MeettheFockers(.)com" is quite different than "MeetMeThere(.)com". My logic is that the latter can have wide range of meanings though they both are in fact actual movie names, and owning MeettheFockers(.)com probably is not the wisest investment (or is it, LOL.)

But I am guessing MeetMeThere(.)com is vague enough to elude itself from associating itself with any motion pictures plus it might appeal to an end user in certain niche. Makes sense?

There are movies of the same name as each other that aren't related. All depends what you do with the domain and how generic the name is.

no its not safe from a legal perspective

but it maybe safe to use it in a certain way

you need a lawyer

if the domain isn't worth the consultation
don't register it

I am not a lawyer

Though I can't swear that it is fact, a number of years ago I read that movie titles can't be trademarked. Hence multiple movies with the same title.

Don't waste time on domains like this, especially if the movie was released 10 years ago
