Noob question: Why are 'aged' domain names more valuable?

Hey all I'm very new to the whole domaining thing and I'm not sure I understand why an 'aged' domain name (no website just name) would be more valuable than a recently reg one. I can totally see why an aged website would be more valuable. And of course it is obvious that a LL or LLL reg 10 years ago would have more value because it is no longer possible to reg names with so few characters. But why would a regular 2-word name be more valuable if it's old? Would be great if anyone could explain this to me. Thanks in advance guys! :alien2:

Because most good/great domains were regged a long time ago (and are thus 'aged'), so the chances of finding a new reg that is/may be 'valuable', is pretty much nil, unless one can find one that capitalizes on a new trend etc.

Hi

age is mostly a factor to domainers looking for such names.

to end buyers, they never ask about it

imo....

Always remember they reg crappy domains during the old days too. So don't only look at age.

Ok so just to confirm, I got this domain moneydive(dot)com that I reg a few weeks ago, say if I were to keep it for 5 years, would that make it more valuable?
Thanks for all your replies!

As said, to an end-user it probably wont matter.
For a domainer/reseller I think 5 years won't change the price much too.
Holding a domain for long period of time will work with specific type of domains.. not the type of domain you have mentioned above.

It wont go up in five years just because of the age. It will instead be more of what the keywords mean (like scuba diving for lost treasure, stock market crash, etc) and are all two word dot coms bought out and held, did the new gtlds tank or greatly accepted?. But just having a 5 will be no big deal five years from now as everyone is holding domains now.

Instead of keeping your domains to next 5 years, i suggest you to buy aged domains from close out & auction to build aged domains portfolio.
