They do, actually. I won't be surprised if some of them thought, "now why did
we not think of this before?"

Whether this is illegal or not depends on whose laws we're talking here. AFAIK,
    what they're doing isn't illegal.

Interesting and understandable why. Of course, no one's required to agree.

Legality aside, this ethical mess is going to hurt their PR terribly. This story has already made the front page of Reddit. :)

    Totally agree.

It's astounding they can't see it yet (and I'm not easily astounded).

My bet is it will be over soon.

Perhaps we should take snapshots of these beautiful ad filled pages before they disappear tomorrow :)

Tying up names like this makes me wonder how they handle credit card info etc. It would scare the hell out of me if I had any account info with these types of shysters.

I sent an email to a couple of NYtimes reporters hoping they will cover it and bring bad publicity to Netsol. I encourage others to do the same to ensure they cover this unethical business practice.

Opportunity has arisen to make a difference in this industry and make an example out of a power house for unethical behavior that has gone on too long among many businesses in this industry. It may never come again on a silver platter like this. Collectively, If we do not seize this opportunity to unite and lash out, other registrars will follow rapidly. Then once again, we will have ourselves to blame and the complaining will continue. It’s time to Step up to the plate, send an email to several NYtimes and Major Newspaper reporters.

Will you be part of the solution or the problem?

    Related:

I wrote this earlier on Conceptualist on this topic.

I posted earlier about monopolys forming on this blog when oversee acquired moniker. (No response was given) This is just more proof how those with major power in this industry can affect everyone. Monopolys will continue to form because there are simply too many individuals in this industry (With the stature to empower change)that look out for number 1 and not the industry as a whole. Additionally, there are no unbiased organizations formed to enforce standards. Standards not enforced are new standards set. (At the mercy of the Consumer) Icann, is not the answer.

It will only get worse due to the value of domain names rising. I find it very unethical to place names on auction that have expired thru a registrar. It is extortion, 100%, it is not allowed in any respectable industry.

However, everyone has accepted it and have empowered/encouraged registrars to continue practicing these unethical behaviors by continuing to partake and support these extortion auctions.

We have brought these new standards upon ourselves and have the nerve to complain about the monopolys pushing the envelope. The finger continues to be pointed at domainers, not registrars.

    Anology:

A drug dealer is only as powerful as the amount of drug users willing to pay. Non paying drug users equals no power to the drug dealer.

The bottom line is there are no unbiased organizations established in this industry to prevent monopolys and unethical business behaviors from occuring. Until these organizations are formed, things will only get worse. A united front needs to be established/supported to make a difference. It is not about individualism in this industry. Wait till yearly registrations reach extortion levels. It is around the corner. The writing is on the wall, unless we support an unbiased organization collectively.

    Thank you for your time.

I am going to have to disagree with you here. If I decide not to pay for another year lease of a domain name, then that domain, after a certain amount of time, is made available to the registry, the registrar, and the general public.

I do not see a problem with this scenario.

    Devil Dog,

I am not talking about renewals or completely stopping your business to prove a point. Continue to run your business.

I am talking about partaking in the unethical auctions held daily of expired domains from registrars. We have empowered them to keep it going. The damage is done and nothing can really be done at this time.

I can not believe you do not see a problem with a registrar hording an expired domain and placing it on auction. Why even offer the name for registration in the first? It is a consumer business, not a loan shark business. We never had these problems in the past. It was made available to the public after expiration, and should continue to be that way. They simply have the upper hand by deciding what they want with the domain you no longer want to renew, making it unethical to the consumer.

Will we allow it to happen with this new unethical technique with Network Solutions? Other registrars will follow if we do.

Reasonable people can disagree strongly about the ethics of expired domain auctions in their various forms.

With this thing that NetSol are doing (and amazingly defending in the name of the customer), it seems we are in a totally different ethics universe.

We have empowered them to keep it going becuase joe schmoe, for whatever reason, decided he would not, or could not pay for that valuable piece of real estate that many others want.

It's all about supply and demand and I think this topic of discussion is better left to another thread.

Another tidbit, domaintools.com has finally made a blog post in regards to netsol's actions, with words like "appalled" and "deplorable" and "fodder" etc.

I find it ironic for an individual to say this when he is selling our domain registration info for a profit, but hey, that should be left for another thread also. :)

So tempting to get NetSol to reserve all 5L.coms... Surely that'll increase the value of my LLLL.com holdings

I always buy whatever I want immediately... Learned my lesson a couple years back.

I've been having some fun with this a bit...

Anyway, it seems like there's a limit to how many names NetSol will reg that you searched. I guess they're looking for "legitimate searches" and didn't think too kindly of me making them the largest 5L.com holder :hehe:

As per request, WELoveGodaddy.com is regged by Netsol.

I also exceeded my quota, but I used a proxy that I found on proxy.org ... this way I can register new domains woohoo :)

    LOL

    Thanks Alex :tu:

Adding a rep because you just advanced my master plan :)

If anyone wants a 5L.com or 6L.com brandable, I suggest you get it now. I have this feeling NetSol is going to own thousands of them shortly :hehe:

Unfortunately they will delete it in 4 days. And I wouldn't give them a tip, because there are some (rare) 5L.com's that actually receive traffic, still hanging unregistered.

I wonder how long this will last.

I checked the registrant search at DomainTools.com, and they show netsol owns 185 domains. At least we can check this way how accurate that is too.

    Sorry for the offtopic.
