Network Solutions + Unethical go hand and hand.

Here's the latest. Try and do a search for some random available name on their site. Make up anything, dkfhgkjhd.com etc etc.

Now go to Moniker or another registrar and attempt to register it.

Name will say unavailable. Wonder why? Because netsol has decided they want to hold that name hostage and force you to reg it at their site for $34.99.

Talk about sneaky, shady, and underhanded.

My advice would be to steer clear of Network Solutions when searching for available names.

Wonder how many other registrars are going to follow the lead.

They instantly (2 mins) put up a page fro the domain you check, the bit I would like someon to answer is - on a name I have checked, once parked - does it show "This Domain is available - Get it Now!" for other people too or just me ?
.

Not just you ...

Devil Dog,

I am not talking about renewals or completely stopping your business to prove a point. Continue to run your business.

I am talking about partaking in the unethical auctions held daily of expired domains from registrars. We have empowered them to keep it going. The damage is done and nothing can really be done at this time.

I can not believe you do not see a problem with a registrar hording an expired domain and placing it on auction. Why even offer the name for registration in the first? It is a consumer business, not a loan shark business. We never had these problems in the past. It was made available to the public after expiration, and should continue to be that way. They simply have the upper hand by deciding what they want with the domain you no longer want to renew, making it unethical to the consumer.

Will we allow it to happen with this new unethical technique with Network Solutions? Other registrars will follow if we do.

Can someone search: WeLoveGodaddy.com for me please :hehe:

I think I searched for too many... They won't reg anything I search for anymore :'(

As per request, WELoveGodaddy.com is regged by Netsol.

I also exceeded my quota, but I used a proxy that I found on proxy.org ... this way I can register new domains woohoo :)

Unfortunately they will delete it in 4 days. And I wouldn't give them a tip, because there are some (rare) 5L.com's that actually receive traffic, still hanging unregistered.

I wonder how long this will last.
With a snowball effect, this could last well longer then 4 days. Considering the tasters have lists of domains that are registered/dropped, and they check them for redrops on the 4th day. Considering they do not look at what the domains are, there is a good chance tasters will be picking these up when netsol redrops them in 4 days... So 4 days could really lead to 8, then 12, then 16 and maybe even 20 days!

NetSol's customers are largely businesses -- not exactly the kind of people that are going to run out and register their name at Godaddy so they can save what amounts to less than 8 cents a day..

This is just another one of their lame excuses to further profits... I'd really love to see domainers search enough names through proxies to make this unprofitable for them... I wonder how long they'd run "this service which is in the best interest of their customers" if it was unprofitable :|

We are probably dealing with unintended consequences here, but nice sentiment. Remember every time a name is searched, that name is then reserved for netsol only, giving netsol a competitive advantage... if only for four days at a time. The way to break this is for ALL registrars to follow this silly practice and give netsol a dose of their own medicine. I probably search through 10-100 times as many domains in a typical day at Fabulous and Dynadot than your typical netsol customer does in a month. Now if Fab and Dynadot start snapping up ALL searches through their interface - then THAT would make an impact on netsol, and like I said earlier, would drain the "quality" part of the total namespace out of the system.

In fact, I think I will write Mike Fabulous and suggest that they start doing this to make an even playing field for Fabulous customers...

Yup, all that's changed is that those beautiful ad filled pages have been replaced with the standard coming-soon page. You can check this freshly regged domain for example:

.......and they are filtering the registrations all of a sudden. eg they won't register tits-tits-tits.com for some reason. I thought they would want that one. :)

well, in all fairness to them they did not actually have any pages showing PPC ads - at least, not from what I have seen.
.

True.

They had something more profitable than PPC ads - advertisement for their own products.

Those crafty suckers!

Well just start typing at NetSol and checking random domains..... I'm sure they have to pay for the domain each time they "hold" one for you..

Wow. I just tried that using Fab and Netsol, and you are right!

Perhaps we should do an exhaustive search of all 63 character .com's.

People keep talking about the LLLL sellout. This would be the 63L sellout.

Very sleazy netsol, very sleazy.

Maybe it is still in your shopping cart? Perhaps they are holding it for you while it is in there for a specific duration?

Edit: Nevermind. My mistake.

Part of me wants to perform an exhaustive search of 63L domains in all their extensions... :notme:

I really don't like seeing this, though. I wonder how long they hold the domain...

NetSol owns some super end user greedy domains now like adsafdiarhehugtbdjhfjghfoigdusohtrbdkgfhdugf.com
nfghhdhgjhghggjfhgjhgjhdjhfjdghjfhghhghghg.com
alpondfdsnhdfshfudhfudshfdbvbdsb.com

How unethical. This is domain theft. Seriously, this is a very very big issue.

People only vehiculated whether whois searches are sold, and to whom, but this is a prime example when one of the biggest registrars in the world does this.

Totally agree on the fun part. Apparently "asdf9akafmasd9fgar.com" is taken by netsol too. If it is a shopping cart thing, I wonder when it times out. The whois says it is reserved until Jan 8, 2009

Marc
thinking they just use the 'domain tasting loophole' prvided by Icann and delete it after 3-4 days if it doesn't get regged.

And when you type in asdf9akafmasd9fgar.com they say:

This Domain is Available - Get it Now!

600,000 domain names are registered daily! Don't delay; there's no guarantee that a domain name you see today will still be here tomorrow!

That is really, really scummy.

Network Solutions is famous for being scummy and underhanded.

It has been that way since the very early days of domaining.

Back in 96' they were putting a $30 surcharge per domain on each order, in which a judge found to be an "illegal tax" and therefore ruled the $30 charge had to be terminated. Go figure..... we never got our "illegal tax" money back from them which probably amounted to a six figure number for our company, all told. Domains after the ruling dropped from $100 a domain to $70 a domain and NetSol was the only game in town - so you had to buy from them still. Then BulkRegister came along to put them in check with $10 domains.

This company will not stop at anything. Absolutely ruthless and scummy. Only ICANN can stop this kinda' crap.

This is all over the web already (At least in our circles) - It will be a huge story IMO ..

Not the first time they have been called out in this way. Remember when all non-registered .com's were resolving to them ?

are they holding every searched name for one year?? this is quite funny, then why don't they hold every [5-255] character available names and let all the world beg them to reg a name...
