I am trying to decide on a name for my new forum and I am thinking about possibly making it .net or .org. My question is, do you think that it is hard for members to remember names with anything other than .com? Would you reccomend using anything other than .com?

Thanks for any advice.

it is considered that there will be some loss of traffic from the other extensions to .com, but if you think the same is really good for your forum then .net or .org will be Ok subject to the theme of the forum. As second choice of extension I would tend to go with .net but only if I could not come up with a suitable alternative .com name

So in other words, your second choice would .net if you couldn't find a .com address?

Yes.

.com is the most valuable of the extensions, and if possible you should definitely get one of these. Also, most internet visitors would type keyword.com instead of keyword.net. .com is easier to remember in other words

You should only choose .net or .org if it makes sense for your website. If your website is a network or organization, you could choose to register .net or .org respectively.

If the .com domain is taken, it would be okay to reg the .net. However you should look out for tradmark infringement.

Also, I would prefer to think of a totally new domain name that I could get in .com

In the case of a forum, if .com is not available to you, I'd go with the .net unless you have some sort of political/social forum that might work well under the .org ext. In most cases, the .net is better than the .org.

I think you'll find that .net is most peoples second choice. The .com extension is the most readily identifiable extension, followed by the .net and then the .org. Then your looking at .info, possibly .co.uk etc..

But in answer to your question, in most cases (almost all), the .com is the preferrable extension, solely because people instantly identify with it, rendering it more valuable. You may lose some traffic to your .com competitior, but if you have a quality site, then trust me, they'll always find their way back. :)

I know a few forums running on the .net instead of the .com because the .com was already taken and they have been around for years and doing well, however I think if at all possible you should buy a domain where you can get the .com version as it is the most popular and most memorable extension.

I would recommend using .net or.org other than .com only if the extension suits the name and if that particular name is not available with .com. If you decide to go with .net or .org and then promote it really well, I don't think it will be hard for members to remember the name.

.com of course. Unless you're building a network of sites.
