Hello NamePros!

Another question...

I'm recently looking through expired domain names using ExpiredDomains.net. I found there are several .com which are available after 15+ days of being dropped, though the .net and .org ( and several other TLDs ) are registered. This has bumped a question in my mind --

Does it add any value to .com? Should a domain be evaluated based on just that factor?

Thanks in advanced,
gct

EDIT : Meant to post in Domain Newbies, sorry.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

It means there are at least two potential end users - in theory.
But if they settled for the second 'best' available, it probably means they had no intention of attempting to buy the .com from the then owner.
They would maybe grab the .com right now if they noticed it is available and they would be happy to 'upgrade'.

But if it's owned by somebody then they would not even look further.

If the .net/.org happen to be low-key websites like personal blogs it's not likely that they have a big budget.
If they are resolving to business websites with a client base and generating revenue, maybe they would consider buying the .com if the price is right.

I would not recommend buying a domain just because it's taken in other extensions. The domain must have good features of its own.
And of course do not attempt to sell them a name that happens to match their trademark.

In many cases, the .NET and .ORG are just being squatted by domain speculators.

So some guy owns the .COM, then a domainer comes along and speculates he could make money by grabbing .ORG. Then another speculator comes in, sees that both .COM and .ORG taken, he speculates that the domain must be valuable, so he grabs the .NET. Now you come along and see all three .COM, .NET, .ORG taken but the .COM appears to be expiring, so you place a back-order at Godaddy and pay several bucks to grab it. Then the whole speculation process goes another cycle.

I'm an end-user of a .NET domain, i could not grab the .COM because everytime it was expiring, some domain speculator pays a lot of moolah to backorder it in an attempt to "resell" it to me. I never paid ransom money for it. The speculator tried to renew it for 2 years, but could not find a buyer. So he dropped out, but not without yet ANOTHER speculator grabbing the domain from backorder and emailing me AGAIN, asking if i wanted to pay him ransom money for it.

Somehow, i think the Domainer's Bible suggests that if an "end-user" is using .NET, you are more likely going to make a lot of money if you try to sell him the .COM.

Usually, a name taken in multiple TLDs (beyond .net and org) is a pretty good sign that the .com is a no-brainer.

Beware, falling into the trap of basing your own decisions on the shitty decisions of other idiots, but its an awfully rare day when six different entities own the .net, .org, .info, .biz, .us and .co.uk of a keyword but the .com isn't worth hand registry.

Use expireddomains.net for a few days. Keep searching for expiring .com domains that have both .net and .org registered... or even ALL other tlds registered.

You'll come to see that so many domains drop that have the .net and .org registered that it basically means nothing.

Good domains are good domains whether the other tlds are registered or not. Research the names that seem like they might be something worthwhile, searching for domains using specific filters isn't research.

Made-up example... look at these domains:

ILoveMoney.com - .com registered, no others registered.
Bucclexoxx.com - all tlds registered.

Which would you buy based only on that information?

Now if you research Bucclexoxx.com and see some actual worth, that's a diff. story.

Thanks for your inputs!

Got the point that the domain should not be evaluated based on the TLDs taken.

Thanks again,

I think you missed the point a bit. It's generally a good thing if many other TLDs are taken, but you need to look deeper. Assuming you have time, look at the registered names to see if they are sites or all held by domainers, as often happens.

If the sites are established businesses, even better.

But this is just one of many factors you should be looking at when regging a name. It's not the top factor for me, but I have a better feeling about picking up a name when the .net, .org and others are regged. On the other hand, I'll register a .com even if none of the other TLDs are registered if the other factors are good.

Same when I'm thinking about dropping a name. If the net and org are both parked by domainers, and the name isn't making me happy otherwise, then I'm happy to drop and let them fight over the scraps.
