My wife thinks of my domaining as an hobby

Hello,

Even though I have told and shown her that about 50% of our household income (after fees and taxes) is generated from my domaining, she still insists that I spend too much time with it and that I should delete more names. I should also work more as a freelancing translator. A job that I actually 'hate', even though the income is ok too.

Our main income have been generated from internet for the last 15 years, so it's not a general anti-internet-digital thing. More that she think that domaining in general will probably fail, make us bankrupt, or something.

Do anyone have a similar, or perhaps a totally opposite, experience?

Well you know it better but I can't consider domaining stable since sales don't depend on the seller but on the domain market which is not stable at all.

Like most jobs, you'll need to work hard to succeed. I can only speak for myself as well, but f I would do it an hour a day or so, I would not sell half of the names I am doing today.

I have been self employed small business owner in Asia for 13-14 years now and I never have had a perfectly steady income during this time, so you are right, stable is somewhat relative. But I like to take care of myself and my work gives me a lot of freedom (and plenty of sunshine). I will probably never get a regular job / employment again.

It is not stable regarding another domainers...
But if we are talking about endusers sales - it strictly depends on quality and seller's skills to do negotiations...

Spot on!

Uh, in your case it was an addition and you were spending money that wasn't yours. Hiding things don't work when it comes out on her statement the next month. If you are still following this pattern, please seek help before she really have a reason to divorce you.

I keep my wife out of the loop, but I only spend money that I've earned. Most of my purchases are from funds I received from sales. So even though I encourage hiding it from the nagging wife, you make sure you're using money you yourself earned and not her credit card.

Mine too :)
Few years ago (ok. maybe few more :) ) she almost leave me because I use her credit card (without her knowledge) to buy 2 x LLL.coms :)
Now despite on huge ROI in past few years (4 months ago I have bought new car, Lexus is300h F ) she still thinks - Domaining is addiction and there is no future in this business :)
But only difference now is - she do not talk to much about that anymore :)

Some wives you tell things to and some you don't. Let me give you an example of typical reactions for wives you shouldn't tell anything to.

You: Dear, I just bought a domain name for $500.
Wife: What is wrong with you?? That $500 could be used for rent, food and shoes for the kids!! You're not going to get laid for weeks!!!

A few years later...
You: Dear, I just sold a domain for $10,000 and I bought it for only $500.
Wife: Wow!! That's great dear, I need a down payment on a new Birkin purse. You'll get laid after we buy the Birkin.

If I knew where my wife kept her credit cards I'd probably do the same thing. Which is probably why she hides them. lol

I have decided to only use PayPal funds for buying and renewing names. I get the funds from my own domain sales, so I can never spend more than I earn.

A big diamond ring with the inscription "Domaining" should suffice

Yeah, right!

Unfortunately, my domaining isn't that lucrative yet. Working on it. ;)

If you forget your wedding anniversary date but remember the expiration date of your favorite domain, you are way past redemption anyway:whistle:

...and probably on towards "PendingDelete" :)

Though! They can be costly; I think buying liquid domains should be the target of domainers with several ideal hand regs. By doing so one could have regular income.

Success matters in every thing you do in life, if you are successful, your wife will love domaining but if you are still learning, its hard to scale through with a wife who is inpatient.

Domaining is highly addictive but one need to be very careful and not showing every thing to a wife who is not patient enough. You know women loves money than any other things. Show her when you make sales and reduce your time spent on domaining; I mean time spent in front of computer.

Thanks. I don't know if you are replying to me or if it is a general comment, but I can make a living from this. Just as I mentioned in the first post. I am still learning, but I sold my first name in 1998, so I guess I also (more or less) know what I am doing by now.

For me, I am trying to do the opposite. The more time I spend with my domaining, the more I sell. Simply because I then find better names (dropcatched, and in auctions). I do not buy a higher of number of names just because I spend more time with this.

.

I strongly disagree. 1998 ?? really?? You?? and now you register thouse new tld-s? Can it be true? I don´t belive you. Looking at your portfolio I would say you started in 2016 and then started again in 2017. Wasen´t it so?

it was a general saying. Learning is a contineous proccess.

You are good to go if you are making money from domaining, why then worry about anybody who does not know what you are doing. All you need to do now is just try and educate her, so that she can know you are investing more of your income on the business and you will later reap more profits. Cheers.

The first names I sold was Swedish surnames (.com) in 1998-1999. If you don't believe me, I couldn't care less.

Also, I have sold more than a hundred new gTLDs. You haven't got a clue. I just sold Iam(.)blue, Crowd(.)tech, Rebel(.)one, Cargo(.)xyz and has two pending $xxxx and one $xxx at Afternic

Ps. believe* wasn't* ;)

No need to be rude. As you may know, english is not my first language. But you should know after english I know at least two other languages.

I just wanted to understand you, I mean You claim you started in 1998 domaining and now register that kind domains.
For me its very hard to understand.
Then I thought maybe drugs are fee in Asia, then I could understand you don´t remember the year exactly.

But ok, let it be.
We all know now you have a wife and you register new tld-s for a living. And that your wife is not happy about it. I mean I can relate to/understand that poor women. I really do..

if my wife would tell me, that She started domaining and is selling new-tlds for living, I would be worried too.

I used her card only once, situation was urgent and I think everyone here would do the same :)
Problem was amount of money (14.000EUR) not using her card, we are not poor people but my wife thinks paying that much for something which is not actually yours is a waisting of time and money.

My wife loves it when I sell something but since I am not going to "work" it isn't a real job.

I've been on a bit of a tear lately (barely after. getting into this whole shoddy business), and my girl is already looking at me funny. I keep saying, "you just wait.....", but so far, it's the funny look

but hey, it's fun, and, as my Father likes to say, "von nüscht kommt nüscht" (from nothing, comes: nothing).
So there.

I have an office, employees, insurance coverage, a 401k plan, and whenever people ask my wife what I do, she just says "porn". It's easier to explain than owning a domain parking company.
