@Eric Lyon

considering its imposisble to request removal of even your own post after its done.. how is it possible that one's post can so easily be deleted, just because it quoted another deleted post?

exactly this happened to me today.

is this new rule and will all posts that quote subsequently deleted posts be from now on removed on np?

We only delete posts when they violate a rule that cannot be rectified another way; this includes any quotes of such rule violations.

Many moderators don't have permission to edit posts, because that has caused issues in the past, so in those cases, the mods either have to delete the post, move it, or keep it.

Rule violation examples and handling:
  • Posted in the wrong area: we can move these to the correct area, and we don't need to delete them.
  • Posted off-topic remarks: can sometimes be moved to another thread (if one exists) or have a new thread created from the post (if applicable). Sometimes, off-topic posts have to be deleted because they don't belong anywhere or it wouldn't make sense to create a topic around such a comment.
  • Disrespectful, hateful, and other unprofessional comments: These have to be deleted entirely and any posts that quote them, because we cannot condone or encourage this type of behavior, and we do not support any copies of it on the site.
  • Spam: These have no place on the site, and any quotes of that spam (even if they're telling the person to stop spamming, which we appreciate the help), need to be removed. Otherwise, the spammer will have accomplished their goal and their spam would remain on the website.
These are only a few examples, but they give you a good idea of our process. I hope that helps.

Note: If you'd like a copy of your post, we can provide you with it as long as it doesn't violate a rule as well.

ok. thank you for this comment. it seems the rule may not be optimal as often it may involve removing replies which were in violation of absolutely nothing. if u can find ways to optimzie then great. thanks for your time and resolving my question.

@alcy -

The best way to avoid it is to not quote posts when you're typing a very long reply. Instead, use complete sentences so that your reply can stand on its own without needing to quote another post. You can also tag the person you are responding to instead of quoting them like I did in this post and how you did in the first post.

We'll also be happy to provide you with a copy of your post upon request, as long as it doesn't violate a rule. You can then revise it and post it again without the quote.

Just a tip. :)
