Hello Everybody,
During the weekend I made a research on "COM.AI" extension. If you have time I would like to share my experience & thoughts as follows:
1) Why I did this research?
Because ".COM" and ".AI" (separately) are the star extensions of the domainers, however according to Namebio "COM.AI" (together) is not.
"COM.AI" registration is unrestricted and open to anyone worldwide like "COM" and ".AI", however 5 most expensive sales of the history of "COM.AI" are as follows:
There has to be a reason for these record-breaking low prices.
We immediately can interpret that "COM.AI" is not a good extension.
The reason can be its SLD?
To understand this, let's compare another SLD for which there is no problem: "COM.AU"
There are several 6 fig sales of "COM.AU" up to 280.000 USD;
So in this example we see that an SLD can very well sell at 6 fig price levels.
This means that the reason why domain investors and end users don't (or let's say dit not until now) prefer "COM.AI" has to be somewhere else.
2) Where is the problem:
First of all, from where people can buy this extension?
Registrars like Godaddy, Dynadot, Namecheap, Namesilo, Network Solutions, Spaceship, Name com, Domain com, Squarespace, that most people use, do not sell "COM.AI", this extension is either "unsupported", or "not valid".
Of course if people cannot buy, there cannot be a market (and awareness) for this extension.
This may explain why historical prices are so low.
Secondly, do we have enough platforms where we can sell this extension?
I found that from Porkbun I can register this extension and I hand-registered 10 dictionary words, then immediately I tried to list them.
-Godaddy Auctions did not accept, because when you begin writing "com.a" Godaddy shows "com.ag" and "com.au" but not "com.ai"; "com.ai" is not existing.
-DAN accepted, but Afternic did not accept.
-Sedo accepted.
-Atom didnot yet accept.
-DNWE didnot yet accept.
Even ExpiredDomains net doesn't show this extension.
As a result, my experience shows that the problem of this extension (with possible good potential) comes from the lack of awareness.
I mean, if (1) some pioneering domain traders/investors/brokers/media invest now, and (2) if more registrars sell & more markets list this extension; more potential buyers will be aware; then the visibility will increase, together with the value.
So what is your opinion?
