The NamePros MOBI forum was among the first dedicated MOBI TLD discussion areas on the Internet. There is a good community of MOBI-interested domainers here on NamePros, and many of them are very passionate about this TLD for one reason or another. Unfortunately, passion leads to sparks, and misguided sparks lead to fires and flames.

One frequent participant in this board has been Jeff, a former NamePros staff member who has expressed skepticism about the MOBI market and frequently comments on the need for development for this namespace to be a success.

I have discussed things with Jeff personally and expressed that his message, however valid, is getting diluted by the repetitiveness and distracting comments that regularly come from people that disagree with him. We both agreed that it's time for a change in focus, both for him and the NamePros MOBI board. His account will be blocked from further participation in the MOBI forum.

On the flipside, the special no-MOBI usergroup that I created for Jeff will be applied to other members as well as needed. We want this to be a place for healthy and constructive discussion. If you only participate in the MOBI forum as an effort to further an agenda - whether to degrade our forum here to promote another, to advertise your services, hype up or blast MOBI for your own personal gain - please - take it elsewhere.

Besides Jeff, three other members have already had the NoMOBI usergroup applied to their accounts. The filter only applies to the MOBI discussion forum. The MOBI marketplace and the whole rest of NamePros will not be affected.

I'm disappointed that measures need to be taken to stop this kind of in-fighting. Hopefully it will lead to positive growth and a return to the NamePros-community spirit that we are more accustomed to.

Thanks,

RJ

Great RJ. Absolutely the right thing to do!
Too many discussions derailed in the past.

RJ, I wholeheartedly support the decision of Jeff being banned from this subforum, but I have to ask: did you similarly discuss this with the .mobi supporters that you included in "NoMOBI"? Having spoken with a couple of them, they seem to have been taken quite by surprise by this.

EDIT: Would you mind letting us know who else is in the group?

As much as I fought with Jeff I vote to let him and the others back in and expect the warning to have served its purpose. The problem was that there was no warning before and the behavior got more and more out of control. I am fairly sure half his posts were done with sole purpose of enraging the board and, as such, think a warning that a banishment will occur should similar behavior persist is appropriate. We need nay sayers on the board as well as those who believe their names will be worth millions no later than next week. We don't need compulsive posters on either side saying the same thing over and over and over again.

I was determined to stay out of this one, but have to say this sounds like another good idea from cac14850.

To be honest, I think everyone (and not only the affected parties) knew that management was taking notice of what was going on. Maybe they didn't expect action to be taken this week or next -- but it was bound to happen.

I've been saying from the start that there were more people involved in this than Jeff and I'm glad RJ took notice of that and will continue to do so.

Some of you may not realize how much work managing the .mobi forum has been for not only me and Garett, but for the entire NP staff. You guys don't see the deleted threads I wake up to every time I take a nap. This is certainly one of the most difficult forums to manage - which is mindboggling granted we only have about 50 regular posters.

Giving most of these guys a second chance won't do any good. I'm not saying they're bad people or anything.. I'm just saying that they're not fit for the .mobi discussion community because they incite flame wars or make posts that enrage naysayers who subsequently incite flame wars... It's all just a big hassle to all of us. I've pmed some of these guys (and others not currently having NoMobi status) and asked them to "turn it down", to no avail. Hopefully this sends a loud and clear message to everyone.

Sorry, Reece, but I just have to say that Scandiman, one of the ones that has been banned from this forum, has throughout the entire past year been a leading light here, and one of the most positive, productive, and level-headed posters in not just the .Mobi subforum but throughout NamePros. The only time he ever was anything less than completely professional was possibly in some responses to Jeff, and even then I think he tried to keep it in check as best he could.

However, I'd say it's more this subforum's loss than Scandi's, really.

I actually pmed RJ about that earlier today (note use of the word most, rather than all). Scandi is the only one on the list whom I feel deserves a second chance.

Agree 100%. I have not spent as much time here recently as I once did, but I cannot recall a single post by Scandiman that would merit a ban.

I know that was a hard decision to make -RJ- :tu: It's not one I wanted to address I'll admit.

Folks - Please take note of this portion -

Thanks to The moderators of this section : garrett200, Reece, stscac :tu: As Reece said , It is a Very hard section to moderate ;)

I think that though he may choose not to return, Scandiman should be invited back. From the start, he answered many of my questions publically and on Pm, taught me a lot and has been a model member for many. He also boasts a very significant .mobi portfolio, and though not dispositive, should be considered when evaluating membership. Indeed the combined portfolios of the membership of a given forum is demonstrative of the power of same.

Discussing "other forums" is just a fact of life and business. Unless the member specifically advertised or solicited members to use another forum exclusively or more than NP, we're bordering undue censorship here. A lot of times things are posted on an "other forum" and get posted on another. Its important for speaading .mobi news to .mobi members as the extension is in its infancy and we have a movement going.

a quick search of "dnf" on NP brings:
Page 1 of 17 1 2 3 4 5 > Showing results 1 to 30 of 500

a quick search of "mobility" on NP brings:
Page 1 of 5 1 2 3 4 5 > Showing results 1 to 30 of 122

http://www.namepros.com/faq.php?faq=namepros#faq_site_rules

As a forum Staff, our primary focus is building and nurturing the Namepros community. We respect that every forum has their own unique qualities of good and bad, however we ask that you do not use NamePros or WebDesignTalk to promote, OR conversely, to depreciate other domain/web design related discussion forums. Likewise we also ask that you do not use other domain forums to advertise for NamePros. This makes for an overall more fair, healthy and friendly environment

The only times I personally think this rule should be 'bent' , Is in a case such as Domain Hijacking / Someone selling stolen Domains / Forums being Hacked etc .... etc ....

Mark, thanks for the rule. If possible, can you clarify a couple of further things as I may wish to do them in the future and would not want to violate NP rules, spirit or culture.

1. there are times that i may read a great thread on another forum and want to get input or share opinions with those here, should i not link that here?

2. there are times that i have a multiforum sale with general time stamp rules, should i not say that in a marketplace thread here?

3. there are times that a member in another forum broke very newsworthy issue(s), should i not refer that it was posted by member x? and if not, if someone posted it here and i wanted to refer it somewhere else, would it break NP rules to refer to that person here or NP specifically?

thanks for the clarifications.

Rules seem fair.

Good job, RJ and Reece.

Thanks,

I am very surprised that Scandiman is also banned, I cannot imagine any reasonable argument why he could not be in agreement with NamePros rules and policies...
Scandiman has also supported me with development ideas or motivations, and other issues related to .Mobi domains. He is indeed one of the leading and pioneering factors within the Mobi Forums. I hope that Scandiman will be invited to come back to this Mobi Forum of NamePros!

Please bring Scandiman back, he is a nice fellow and doesn't deserve a ban, like the others. Especially one person, IMHO  :gl: :snaphappy: :talk:

The intellectual standard of this forum just dropped a rung with the exclusion of scandi imho
I'll respect the decision but imho none of these guys needed to be excluded

Anyway, i spend little or no time here these days anyway. Hopefully things will improve in a bit.

Are these temporary 'asbo's' ? :hehe: :sold:

I can see banning a few members who consistently choose to bash mobi or any other extension. These forums should be a social gathering where one can obtain the latest info and insight on their investments. Some here choose to participate just to bring others down even though they have nada invested. Good move to get rid of them!

As for Scandi, he has been nothing but helpful and has a wealth of knowledge to offer in the mobi forum. It would be sad to put him in the same class as someone like Jeff who contributes nothing. If it is because Mobility is thrown in with a few of his posts, that's unfortunate. I'm sure it is not intentional and lets not forget countless times that others mention outside forums as well. Is everyone who speaks of another forum going to get banned here? Scandi deserves to come back, end of story!!

I feel management is taking steps in the right direction on the subject. The mobi community may rebound at namepros if people can just do the right thing here.

Well said....

I have just stayed away as this forum as it was no longer "fun". I think this is a great step and I look forward to coming back. With that being said, the one person who deserves to be here I believe is Scandi. He has helped out a lot of people in the mobi forum including myself and I was very sad to see him go.

Thanks, Gary.

ps- the 4am feedings are alright as now I can catch up on a lot more posts :)
