Can we start a discussion on mobi development?

After my add day thread on the mobi 2010 I want something positive to discuss.

http://pc.dev.mobi/

I found that site today and haven't seen anyone post it.

On that page is a cool mobi ready report. Check it out. The mobi standards seem very high.

Can we discuss here some possible ideas or tools for developing mobi sites? Also revenue and how to monetize a mobi site.

It's often been said even by mobi proponents that development is key. Let's discuss what the development potential really is.

I posted about this tool some time back in the thread below:

http://www.namepros.com/dot-mobi/256565-check-your-site-mobi-ready-dev.html

Yes, the mobi standard is very high. I have been using this .mobi "ready" tool for a while for my sites. After spending lot of time I can now get my sites 5/5 with this tool. I also use the emulator at mtld.mobi to check sites that are submitted to dir.mobi before accepting the entry.

I think to start with one can use the free templates provided by dev.mobi.

There is also another sticky thread about developing .mobi sites as well, check it out:

Well what are some good sites to create with mobi? I have dxd.mobi but have no clue what I should add there. If I had good development ideas I might reg more mobi names. I kind of have a rule about domains that if I can't come up with a good use for it then neither can someone else.

So anyone want to give me some ideas for dxd.mobi? Maybe I just need to think outside (or inside) the box.

There is also this site
http://www.mobisitegalore.com/
it was posted by another NP member

As for development...
it is fairly easy to use as far as the setting
up goes (I'm still working on my development)
Anyhoo - the main problem I am encountering
is the index.xhtml .
In order to view it it either FF or IE7 I had to rename
the index file to index.html
According to the site it is supposed to view as a xhtml in order
to be compliant , but having the index called xhtml all I could
get was the site 'index of/' as if I hadn't uploaded anything.
after renaming the index file - it worked great, or so I thought...
when you go to my site it shows an unedited template, and when
you click on a link you can see where I have added text.
Now if you click on the nav home button on the left, instead of the back
button, it takes you to index.xhtml which is the one I edited and is
supposed to be the main.

So I guess the point is - this seems to be an issue - from what I understand,
for a few people.
Has anyone who is in development stages encountered this issue,
and if so, were you able to fix it?
Phew :)

Make sure your web server serves xhtml pages....you may need to add an htaccess file or edit your httpd.conf in apache for this to work.

I added this to the .htaccess
AddType text/html .xhtml

But I don't know where the httpd.conf is. I haven't
been able to find it yet...

Add

Code:
DirectoryIndex index.html

To .htaccess

To monetise a mobile currently the best way is to display ads for mobile websites. There are a few ringtone mobile website you can get affiliate links too, etc. In more time there will be more.

Instead of what I already have?

Either or can work. Yours sets a mime type, mine just sets the default DirectoryIndex

I've changed it to what you have, I think
it's what Labrocca mentioned, about the Apache httpd.conf
I haven't been able to locate that. When I looked through
something else earlier, I think in my WHM it said something about html - xhtml
so I took it for granted that the Apache was already right
so I gave up trying to find it
I guess I better find it now in order to see if it works...

When viewing mobi sites with my pc, and I click on a link, a window pops up wanting to download a file. Has anyone else noticed this and is this normal?

It's actually doing that on my site at the moment
It just started when I read your post....
my links were working 5 mins ago...let me see if
I've done something :gl:

You have a typo...it should be xhtml

Code:
DirectoryIndex index.xhtml

but add this as well

Code:
AddHandler xhtml-handler .xhtml

If that doesn't work try this:

Code:
AddHandler server-parsed htm html xhtml

Let me know if none work.

I added
AddType text/html .xhtml
AddHandler server-parsed htm html xhtml
and just got
index of/

changing it.....

It was because I removed the index.html file

but it's still doing it...when you go directly to the site
it shows
1. About Us
Learn about our company and people

when you click on the link 'About us' then click on the 'Home" link on the
nav bar, you get the right index page,
1. About Us
A little bit about what's going on.

but in order to have anything I have to name the index.html
all the other pages are .xhtml

where is that Apache thing?

You can test your site at mr.dev.mobi

You want valid code, valid profile, no frames (generally) and to allow the option of resolving at name.ext to be in compliance. Getting a 5 is good.

Thanks for the link - it shows 5/5 because it's just
the template with some changes. No content yet...

That looks great, I see you aren't facing
the same issues I am...:)

Seems like the issue is definetly in the Apache httpd.conf
everything I do seems to point back to it.
I see the program in my cpanel, but not the actual httpd.conf file
I don't know enough about it to be changing server files anyway.
Looks like this may be a downfall for me for developing .mobi's
I am no genius and google tells me it's in a place it isin't.

Is it something I need to contact the guy with the hosting
servers about? Since google refers to the server - and plus the fact
I can't find it myself :bah:
It's probably right in front of me (don't laugh)

I'll figure this out if it kills me!

:p
