 No, I don't really mind.

I've already expressed my opinion on .mobi several times before :hehe:

And yes, I do have a .mobi bumper sticker. Got it at one of the conferences.
Boooo! Fence-sitter! :notme:

I think the mobile web itself has a long, long way to go. I don't think an extra extension is necessary, and it's just a short-term fix until the technology is ready. :imho:

The only people saying that .mobi is dead are within the domaining community. Reseller values are plummeting not because the extension is just now dying. Any reselling all along was simply hype and speculation, which drove prices up. We see this all the time; in fact, it's happening right now with LLL .coms as the market corrects itself. People seem to want instant gratification on selling domains, but domaining is kind of a long-term game. Hold on to something for a few years and see what happens.

That's because domainers are one of the few groups to have even noticed dotmobi. Go to large webmaster forums and try to find discussions around mobi or even the mobile web. It's like web 2.0. It's fictional....the internet is one thing.

I am cool startup company. Which do I use for my product? Witme2you is the fictional company name. My service will be a mobile solution for companies to send messages.

How about we ask him about something less controversial like abortion, the death penalty, or human cloning??

So really folks THE solution to the mobile problem is simple redirects.

ie

m.domain.com
mobile.domain.com
domain.com/m
domain.com/mobile
etc

ALL companies that have a mobile site should tell their IT department

to simply redirect all popular mobile conventions to the mobile enabled

webspace and stop paying for an expensive redirect solution and stop

diluting their brand.

dotMobi, the company behind the .mobi Internet address designed specifically for mobile phones, and AKQA Mobile, the mobile division of the global independent creative agency, announced the results of an extensive consumer study of mobile Internet usage and attitudes. Conducted by the AKQA's Research & Insights department in conjunction with dotMobi, the survey reveals key insights into the importance of a better mobile Web for consumers in the U.S. and U.K.

The survey findings indicated a strong consumer desire for practical mobile content on phones. Rather than basic entertainment and ringtones, consumers stated that their most-wanted mobile activities included phone-optimized banking and travel planning.

Further illustrating the desire for utility-focused mobile Web sites, nearly 90 percent of consumer respondents stated that they would be more likely to choose an airline with mobile check-in facilities over one that did not offer them.

Additionally, trust in the mobile Web was inherent throughout the results of the study. In demanding access to mobile banking and mobile commerce abilities for basic utilities such as groceries, plane tickets and books, Consumers said they trust the mobile Web to keep their personal information secure, as opposed to the PC-based Internet, where security remains of utmost importance.

Other results from the mobile Internet usage and attitudes study include:

Approximately 90 percent of the 2,000 respondents in the online panel provided by Research Now are interested in learning about the mobile Web, demonstrating a need for brands to make their mobile properties findable via mobile search, marketing and advertising campaigns. Fifty percent of respondents were unaware that there are mobile sites optimized for use on mobile phones and the vast majority - 86 percent of participants - said they were interested in knowing which sites are easily accessible on a mobile phone.
Nearly 50 percent of respondents said that a poor experience on their initial use of the mobile Web made them "reluctant to access" either the site - or the Internet in general - on their mobile phones again.
Only 2 percent of participants in the survey who have purchased a phone in the past six months chose an iPhone. This indicates that brands that don't optimize their mobile services for a variety of mobile phones will provide a substandard mobile Internet experiences for a vast majority of consumers.
Poor site display and layout remain top reasons for mobile Web dissatisfaction among consumers.
Almost two-thirds of participants stated that they would consider purchasing theater tickets, take-out food and travel tickets via a mobile phone.
Finally, 63 percent of survey respondents said they would be more likely to give up their money than their mobile "smart phone" if they were mugged.
Daniel Rosen, managing director of AKQA Mobile, said, "The enormous popularity of mobile devices has had a profound effect on the lifestyle of the consumer, unleashing new levels of connectivity and personal mobility. When planning campaigns, global brands need to ensure they take into account the role the mobile device can play in helping them engage with customers, and that they create campaigns that have been developed specifically for mobile applications. The survey's findings show how easily consumers were turned off by earlier, ill-conceived mobile campaigns. With mobile devices more ubiquitous, powerful and sophisticated than ever, there is a real opportunity for brands to deliver ground-breaking mobile campaigns that captivate, engage and entertain their customers."

"The results from this research signify the need for a better mobile experience, something that dotMobi is committed to making available to consumers globally," said Amy Mischler, vice president of Identity and Brand Services at dotMobi. "The free services that dotMobi offers - like DeviceAtlas, ready.mobi and the dotMobi Developer Forum - ensure that developers and marketers can give consumers a mobile Web experience that is useful, and complementary to the mobile lifestyle."

"The .mobi domain quickly lets consumers know that a site will work on a mobile phone. It's also the most widely used naming convention among the Nielsen top 10 Web sites, so consumers are learning to 'guess .mobi' when trying to find a site on a mobile phone. They're seeing that they'll have a more positive Internet experience on their mobile phone anytime and anywhere," Mischler said. "And now that more than 1 million .mobi names have been registered, the availability of rich, diverse content for mobile consumers is growing daily."

R.i.p.

I (and many others here) have, once again, been vindicated ! :music: :yell:
What a great present while here on vacation, and ... through and through (as a tribute to old friend, Yelo) ... thank you for all of your PM support and personal notes and emails, friends!

PS. The iPhone, of course, was not the sole killer of the silly "dot Mobey" ... its troubles began with the repeated fumbling and dumbling by mTLD itself, and in its entirely feable attempt to make aware, that is to effectively brand, an inherently unprofessional two syllabled, awkward, and CLUMSY extension! :guilty:
It is, and has always been, both unnecessary and counterintuitive for the desired freedom of full, unrestricted Mobile Web© "on the go" use! :talk: :imho:

PS. You heard it hear on your #1 Namepros FIRST, always remember that folks ... :gl:
"dot Mobey" R.I.P.™ :!: 8-X _\|/_

Happy and Safe 4th!

Not totally.

First, I never believed .mobi would make it and shorted my few LLL's when the market was high.

That said, I guess I'm a bit of a hypocrite. I do use one .mobi every time I go to a book, music, or electronics store: amazon.mobi. It's great for price comparison and product reviews. One of the only practical .mobis I have seen.

Could the same have been done with m.amazon.com? Absolutely.

Amazon.mobi redirects to the amazon.com mobile site from here (on my iphone) and if you type in amazon.com you get the Amazon mobile site on your mobile anyway.

I don't. In my phone browser Amazon.com is the regular site. The .mobi is the mobile site.

You guys are so deluded - and in a weird, creepy sort of way. Bordering on the sinister; it's like a cross between a cult, and a stalker.

Jeff, your High Priest or however you regard him (himself), definately strikes me as being the type of guy that everyone in the street is 'aware' of.

Vindicated you say - how so? Dead you say? Could you give us your definition of 'dead'?

it should be renamed to .moby -

all figuratively of course. ;)

Some Staff/Mods like .mobi - Some don't ...... It would be silly to expect them to donate their time here and not freely express their opinions though IMO ~

The mobile web is here - and it will stay ... But it started without the .mobi extension , And didn't need it really. Most examples you guys use all day long of big companies coming on board is nothing but "Brand Protection" - Simple as that. Of course Amazon.com doesn't want Amazon.mobi out there floating around in someone elses hands - Duh !

Something I'd like to see more discussion on is the value of a "Mobile Visitor" - Obviously , If you are paying for advertisers to come to a site where people can order items via a mobile phone etc ... You won't mind paying for that visitor. But what about the many many sites out there that have nothing to offer Mobile visitors (Mainly speaking of typical cell phone users with tiny screens here) ? I don't know about you folks .. But I'll be pretty upset if I just paid for a high$ clickthrough for a mobile visitor to show up at my site I never wanted.

How much are they worth really ? Looking at your full size site with a 2" screen. :|

There is free expression, and there are attempts to riducle a small but very active group.

I would expect a domain forum to embrace all aspects of this industry, and the staff of such a forum must surely sometimes temper their own desire to get a kick in, if they want to be taken as seriously as they take themselves.

I find it absolutely ridiculous that there are factions who go out of their way to diss others, just because they have chosen a different path.

It's stupid, childish, counterproductive, and above all - a waste of everyones time; mine included.

Nothing I say will change anything here, the same prats will start the same flaming threads, and the sheep will follow.

I'm outta here!

I don't know if these people claiming that .mobi is dead are genuinely expert or are merely basing their opinions on the sale prices of .mobi domains. I do not think that .mobi is dead. It is a niche extension. Most of the domains that are dropping seem to never have been developed and tend to follow .com speculation patterns. I think that a lot of these 'experts' do not understand the dynamics of new and niche extensions. They are certainly not experts in the field of domain statistics.

Latest .mobi figures as of 01/July/2008 compared to 01/June/2008:
.mobi Domain count 01/July/2008: 925132
New since 01/June/2008: 30211
Deleted since 01/June/2008: 17149
Most new domains: domaincontrol.com 13576
Most deleted domains: domaincontrol.com 12922

Regards...jmcc

The staff should be free to post their opinions on .mobi many of them are far more qualified about industry trends than us part-timers. Hopefully newcomers will realise they can deploy their capital in more effective ways than wasting their cash on the crappy .mobi extension.
