A blockchain,[1][2][3] originally block chain,[4][5] is a continuously growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked and secured using cryptography.[1][6] Each block typically contains a cryptographic hash of the previous block,[6] a timestamp and transaction data.[7]By design, a blockchain is inherently resistant to modification of the data. It is "an open, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way".[8] For use as a distributed ledger, a blockchain is typically managed by a peer-to-peer network collectively adhering to a protocol for inter-node communication and validating new blocks. Once recorded, the data in any given block cannot be altered retroactively without the alteration of all subsequent blocks, which requires collusion of the network majority.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
It was originally two words but those two words combined have basically formed their own meaning which makes it now a compound word or one single word.

Compound Words

When two words are used together to yield a new meaning, a compound is formed. Compound words can be written in three ways: as open compounds (spelled as two words, e.g., ice cream), closed compounds (joined to form a single word, e.g., doorknob), or hyphenated compounds (two words joined by a hyphen, e.g., long-term). Sometimes, more than two words can form a compound (e.g., mother-in-law).

The most common spelling quandary writers face is whether to write compounds as separate words, one word, or hyphenated words.

Originally it was clearly 2 words. But the field gradually started mainly writing it as one word, and now I would say it was one word. Languages do change over time. The OED give a definition with it as one word, and that is good enough for me!

No matter whether one word or two, it is a valuable domain name to hold these days! :xf.smile:

It's a compound word. One word.
Did we all fail English class or just me?

Though two words but the tech (Blockchain) has become a single word (combining two words; Block+Chain). Just like Microsoft (Micro+Soft; two words).

Man I tell you, Google must be lazy!

When I typed in the search bar for
Block Chain definition it says

Did you mean: blockchain definition

It's two words - presently, but it'll probably grow to be known as one word in future as usage becomes more common

Thinking about it more carefully, I think it's safe to say blockchain is one word already. Cheers.

PS I've updated my vote!

Is Blockchain.com a 1 word or 2 word Domain❓
"blockchain" is a 1 word in the sense as "raindrop" (for example) is also 1 word although such 1 words are actually a "fusion" of 2 words (and at the end a fusion of letters).

"(.)com" is a 1 word - abbreviation (- TLD) of which stands for "(.)commercial" which is also 1 word.

So the exact definition / answer to your question would be:
"blockchain.com" is a "1 word / (.) / 1 word - abbreviation (- TLD) - domain".

"The words block and chain were used separately in Satoshi Nakamoto's original paper, but were eventually popularized as a single word, blockchain, by 2016. The term blockchain 2.0 refers to new applications of the distributed blockchain database, first emerging in 2014."[21]

Clearly, you have already made up your mind and are intent on proving you are right and resort to calling people lazy for not agreeing with you lol. Each is its own word, much like 'bit' and 'coin' (bitcoin) though they have formed a new compound word. Block-Chain.com works because the hyphen visually representing the chain or the link between.

Block.com
Chain.com
Blockchain.com ( made up word ) Fake

Is BlockSolution ( Block Solition ) one or two words ❓

It’s 2. All words are made up. How do you think language came about anyway? The apple said to the neanderthal: I am to be called an apple? It’s an everchanging puzzle with common basic rules. Words and compound words come to existence and disappear all the time. The driver of change is usage, which is driven by demand.

Usage determines ”correctness”. It would be very hard to argue that something is correct because it used to be.

Is it teapot or tea pot? It depends on how old you are.

It is

Block-Chain.com sold for 1 million
Domain-Names.com sold for more than 200.000

🤣
If you are now changing the point of your argument; fine. But you were talking on one word or two words domains.
Yap! you can talk about sales and the type of the domains; I would love to hear about that, but the price can not be reversed; However, we can learn from the sales and see on how to make up the opportunities by reviewing the types of the names and get something out of it.

Cheers

It’s about Education
You started this

Block Chain = Original
Blockchain = made up

Actually, you started it. Many others corrected you.
There's plenty of resources out there for you to educate yourself on made up / fictitious (lmao) compound words.

"You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink."

Be that horse, not a Don Key.

The more interesting topic is the awareness that blockchains are really only suitable for crypto-currencies with immutable records, and that most of the projects that purport to be blockchain based, would be more suitable as centralised database structures.

Now for a thought on the original question - a 'big end' is ( surprisingly ) a large end, but if you combine it into one word, it has a specific meaning. A bigend is the mainshaft end of a conrod. Similarly, a 'block chain' is a chain of blocks, but the single word blockchain has come to refer to the transaction stream of a crypto-currency.

Block chain is 1 word if you use it related to crypto world.
It does not matter if the noun consists of 2 or more words and if it's written separately or not.
It's a 1 word noun in cyrpto. If you say block chain is 2 words it will mean a different thing.

These are similar 1 word nouns:
New York, San Fransisco, United States, White House, United Kingdom, Black Sea, Near East, Far East and so on.
I hope you get the idea. Educate yourself.

Compound words are real. It is not the end of the world or the end of the two worded use of block chain. Both will be valid well into the future. Two words become one all the time. Not all words get compounded. Still not even a "chainsaw" will be able to keep these two apart for long. Surprising that this is even being debated ... both are valid and true...

...meanwhile even more emojis are getting into the dictionary as we argue! Some heads should roll for this...

Not sure if you are trolling, or you don't have a life.

Words do not compound into one word instantly invalidating the two worded use.

Unfortunately language is defined by use.
accordingly
Both will be valid well into the future
as both will be in regular use for a long time to come.

All the required evidence was submitted on page one. The jury is NOT out on this, they all went home and the case has been closed ever since. Special thanks to @hookbox for the English lesson.

Despite the case being closed I hope this thread remains open. It will serve well to see which pros are best at ignoring facts. I for one am looking forward to further presentations of irrelevant data on this subject.

Let's beat this dead horse back to life, we are pros after all!

Merriam Webster seems to be in agreement with Oxford as well (but then again, the odd couple is seldom caught arguing among themselves):

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/blockchain

However, if you look carefully at how both of these dictionaries define 'Blockchain', it appears the only credence in defining the word as a single compound is given to its sole meaning as an open distributed ledger tech:

''A system in which a record of transactions made in bitcoin or another cryptocurrency are maintained across several computers that are linked in a peer-to-peer network.''

And:

'': a digital database containing information (such as records of financial transactions) that can be simultaneously used and shared within a large decentralized, publicly accessible network; also : the technology used to create such a database''

... with
thee above citations lending support to:
Though two words but the tech (Blockchain) has become a single word (combining two words; Block+Chain). Just like Microsoft (Micro+Soft; two words).
Does it mean in a different area of expert knolwedge the use of a single form is not justified, unless it warrants an analogy to the tech context as provided above ?

So, what is DNA ? Is it to be treated as consisting of many block chains or should it be viewed as the blockchains of life ? ;)
