I have a few hundred .com domains on non-Afternic FT / MLS registrars acquired in the last 2-4 months. I intend to transfer them to FT enabled registrar at the end of first year.

If you had limited capital, would you focus on acquiring more names or transferring the existing names to a FT/MLS enabled registrar right after the 2-month transfer lock.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The question is too general and is actually about how you appraise your domains.

What are the names involved?

No, I have a 1.5-2% conversion on these names per year, so 90% of these will anyway be renewed. Question is about prioritization. Does FT make such a big difference to sales ?

Eg names: Seaquake dot com, Caskel dot com etc.

I see.

Choosing a registrar that offers both Sedo FT and Afternic FT can definitely be beneficial. Porkbun is one such registrar with very low transfer and renewal fees. Given your limited budget, I recommend transferring around 20%-25% of your domains at this moment. Focus on those domains priced in the ‘sweet spot’ range, which can be easily purchased with a credit card or PayPal without needing higher-level approval. These domains are ideal for listing through the extensive partner networks of Sedo FT and Afternic FT.

Note: I didn’t address the "or should I invest in new domains" part because I’m not sure how it relates.

I certainly understand that you are on a budget, but I can't give any sensible advice when I take that part into account.

Does the question have anything to do with reg fee vs transfer fee?

What's the lowest transfer price to a FT registrar right now? Assuming around $10?

Vs

What's the lowest reg fee right now? Anything less than $5.96 at Z.com (not FT approved) or $6.99 at porkBun (FT approved)...?

I'd think your answer would be name dependent, and if you plan on dropping or wholesaling the names you don't want to renew.

Sometimes a domain looks appetizing at a $6 reg fee, but the extra $4 the following year for a $10 renewal may feel a little steep depending if I lost or gained interest in that domain after owning it for a year...

I have a 1.5-2% conversion on these names per year,

Can I ask at what sales price point?

If you're selling 1.5-2% for $1,500+, I'd assume that could justify renewals...

If your new regs are the same quality as your renewals, and if funds are limited, you might be better off wholesaling/dropping instead of renewing, and using the new capital on new regs.

But then you're fighting the question, do second/third/fourth year regs sell better than first year regs? ie if a potential buyer is waiting for your domain to drop before making an offer or binning now...

I wouldn't base my decision on FT/MLS. IMHO, at its current state the system does not bring enough benefit in order for us to plan around them. Someone who has done A/B testing, whether on purpose or accidentally, with a large portfolio could give you better input.
