Hey all,

I'm just curious about what all of you would do with your own domain extension? I've always dreamed of starting my own one day, and I'm sure many of you have as well.

If you had the $185,000 + to create and run your own nGTLD domain extension, which name(s) would you choose and why? How much would the reg fee be? Would you reserve names? Would you price higher quality names at premium prices?

for me, I'd go with .find. Everyone on the internet is looking to find something, and .find would provide so many opportunities for web services dedicated to finding anything from apartments to zoos. Information, services, locations, everything is possible with an extension like .find.

I would expect a high volume of registrations, so I'd offer them for about $15.00. Of course I would probably list some of the better names for a premium fee, but nothing over $100.

Yes, I'd love to start my own and probably will at the next opening. But won't share, of course, which one exactly, because I don't need a bidding war in case somebody likes my idea ))

I've actually thought about this and I thought of .now. After doing so I searched later and found that there was going to be a .now.

Great call to action short extension and works with anything. So this is what I thought of before I heard it was coming some day.

$185,000 is ICANNs application fee for a New gTLD ...
In order to properly run a registry, promote it and all that, you will need at least $5 - $10 million USD.
We heard many times people saying that a New gTLD domain name will never sale for more than $185,000 as with this amount you can have your own gTLD ... that´s absolutely incorrect, to run a new gTLD you need to pay ICANNs fee of $185K, but also start a registry and overall promote it which is the higher cost of this business !!! Some new gTLDs sales courtesy of Sold.domains

Multiple organizations/businesses can apply for the same extension ... in this case it goes to auction ...

2.2 How do I apply for a new gTLD?
Any established public or private organization anywhere in the world can apply to create and operate a new generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) registry. Applicants will need to demonstrate the operational, technical and financial capability to run a registry and comply with additional specific requirements. Please refer to the Applicant Guidebook for detail information on the application process, including the application questions in Module 2, attachment 2.

Please note that applying for a new gTLD is not the same as buying a domain name. An applicant for a new gTLD is, in fact, applying to create and operate a registry business supporting the Internet's domain name system. This involves a number of significant responsibilities, as the operator of a new gTLD is running a piece of visible Internet infrastructure.

The application window is expected to open on 12 January 2012 and close on 12 April 2012.

The evaluation fee is US$185,000. Applicants will be required to pay a US$5,000 deposit fee per requested application slot when registering. The deposit will be credited against the evaluation fee. Other fees may apply depending on the specific application path. See the section 1.5 of the Applicant Guidebook for details about the methods of payment, additional fees and refund schedules.

Right now wanting that, doesn't seem to be the intention of ICANN.
