I don't think anyone would dispute that the .com extension is by far the most sought after TLD, with instances of increasing the value of the SLD a hundredfold over the second most sought after alternative (surfed.com: $5,000 vs surfed.net: $55).

With that said, in light of search engine optimizations prioritizing content and traffic over generic domains and the growth and normalization of CC, ICC and ICANN alternatives how do you think .com will hold up? Will .com continue to skyrocket in value or is it bubble on the verge of bursting, or somewhere in-between?

That said, I'm not so much interested in your opinion as I am in the motivation behind that opinion, so I'd appreciate if you took your time elaborating on your speculations.

.COM has grown organically in the last 25+ years. It is certainly not some bubble.
It is universally used & recognized as a credible option.

.COM is strong as it has an actual user base. There is actual demand. There is actual end user sales.
It is not some house of cards based on hype that is going to collapse.

.COM is still strong despite the introduction of thousands of new extensions. As a group those new extensions have been losing massive registration volume while .COM still grows.

As long as there is demand for domains there will be demand for .COM. Even great domains can take a long time to sell. I will hold quality .COM as long as there is demand for them, or they can be monetized in another way.

I think domain names will live on for longer than people think. A bit like the telephone numbering system that is very old, but simple, universal and efficient.
I would expect .com to stay strong in 20 years, thriving along ccTLDs.
Even if .com stopped being fashionable, the accumulated mass is so considerable that it would take forever for other extensions to catch up.
Domain names and .com in particular have been massively using in advertising and branding, so it's not like you can ditch them overnight. They have become part of the social fabric.

Major corporations will still have .com domains. But, I think going forward, the Internet will become far more centralized with major hubs like Facebook, Amazon, Youtube, etc. I think these sites will become one stop shops for blogs, products and services, news, etc. I see most smaller and medium sized businesses creating their business webpages directly on these platforms without the need for their own .com domain.

I think the bigger danger to .com is technology more than other TLD's.

I personally don't see it happening any time soon, but at some point some technology will evolve making domains less relevant. Might be 20 .. or 200 years .. probably something in between! lol
