.eu domain names are expected to be the world's second most used extension.

Sources like 3character.com report the lowest value of a .net is $335, and the lowest value of a .com is $1950. If the usage for .eu names is between .net and .com, the price for 3 letter .eu domains should be also between $335 and $1950. How about a price of $1,000 each for 3 letter .eu names with popular letters like "a", "c", "e", "o".

To make $100,000 you just register 100 three letter .eu names with popular letters.

Even if you register 3 letter names with q, x and z., and .eu names only realise the value of .nets, you will still have a portfolio worth $33,500.

Any comments?

It would be nice if it works out that way - I have over 100 LLL.eu's pre-reg'd but I think I will be very lucky if they manage to get a couple of them for me.

Who know what they will be worth but it's worth the risk IMO :) Good luck everyone snagging some nice .eu's. :)

Does this mean that when people put them up here for appraisal in a few weeks time they are only going to be worth reg fee - like all the .be's :yell:

I would expect them to be all gone within 3 days of the start.

at least, if not MORE than 80% of the LLL.eu names have been snapped up already! And all of the ones that are any good, eg, ALL Premium letters or 3 letter words have been snatched up already!

No doubt they'll be taken very quickly, but I cant see you finding buyers for them instantly. It would be a worthwhile investment though, I agree.

I just don't get the commercial opportunities of these domains. They seem very unlikely to be used in the UK as we have a perfectly good extension with .co.uk.

Using them for the EU is politically based and therefore has a shelf-life. All countries have their own cc.tlds for which .com is used instead.

Other generic tlds (.net and .info) have had limited sucess in Europe, whilst .de, .co.uk and .fr etc have forged their own path already.

Am I the only one that sees limited scope for .eu extension?!

No!

More companies serve each specific EU country than Europe as a whole. For these companies, their cctld is a more natural choice than a .eu. There will therefore be more competition for cctlds than for .eus, leaving prices lower than otherwise.

One of the biggest barriers to the growth of the .eu extension, I think, is the lack of a common European language. This makes it particularly natural for companies to have different sites for different (national) markets.

My instinct is that .eu domains will be like .us domains but with more problems. Don't get me wrong; I think they'll be well worth having (like .us domains). They won't however, be an instant .com rival, or anything close.

no indeed, they will be useful for euro-wide institutions, but this will not stop the domainer goldrush from registering totalcrap.eu and xyj.eu for posterity....
