This contains a few different points that could be commented on. I ask that you be civil toward me in some of my ignorance, I do reply to comments and do so in a fashion to state my case, as I believe it to be, do not take thats me being aggressive, I have attempted to understand aspects the best I can and feel passionate about my opinions. This speaks to any post I make not just here. So I suppose that was a bit of an introduction.
My name Phil, around the beginning of the year I caught the domain name bug. A partner and I were developing a business and needed a domain name, through the course of that process is when I started to buy up some name. Since then I have acquired 220 or so names. In the beginning I didn't bother to check trademark, I had gone under the real world model that if I were to name my business there were means in place to possible prevent me from using it, simply put I thought available meant available. Although I do have an opinion on this I understand the rules are what they are.
First up, How do I deal with these names, I would like handle it properly, I didn't not have malicious intent nor have I at all benefited from their ownership, I was simply ignorant?
During this time a long time friend came for a visit and there were some names ..., lets just say I wish the whiskey would undrink itself. What is the best way to get rid of names that should have never existed? those that have no purpose outside the context of a moment.
In both those scenarios I am not interested in money. Porn names, once again, not really proud on this one but more as a ahaha i can't believe that is not taken, pass me another beer, I ended up with a short list of those. Do people buy small lots of these, I would like to see some return on investment as some of the stats suggest that the might turn a small profit.
Speaking of value. I understand that is dependent on what a buyer is willing to pay, that goes for any industry. I have noticed a trend, that when someone puts their list up for the public eye the only thing you really ever see in response is "I don't see anything worth the reg", and that is usually the kinds way. For instance I put up a single name to one of the group valuation things, is was not a .com which basically damned it out the gate, all I got was mostly negative feedback. The name is a common slogan in two different industries, a two word where the second word is the domain. My question is, are buyers out that so hung up on the .com that they would prefer "businessname.com" instead of "business.name"
I have a couple of .co.uk some single word stuff a five letter and a 9 letter stand out, with the upcoming .uk is now the time to start marketing these or should I go ahead and secure the .uk through my first choice option? please refrain from another reminder that if its not .com then it might as well not exist, did ask that question, save it for the last piece.
Why is .com always going to be king. aren't a new generation of people entering into the market, ones that don't know what dial up, bbs, 56k or how about 9600 baud, those all saw the rise of .com I understand that he flood of new names changes the game, I can understand why those with all .com portfolios would hate it. My question is how is that "departmentstore.com" is more attractive that "department.store"? Is the negativeness the new domain name there because they suck or because somebodies .com they have sat on for 15 years just lost it's value?
As I said before I like a good conversation, I believe people can disagree and still be civil. I look forward to comment if any. If not I will go about to try to get my portfolio where I think it should be and pushing forward. Cheers
Phil
