When to expand your domain names?

im planning on developing a domain name that i have. i dont have a lot of money to just snatch up all the .net's .org's .mom's or all those things out there. what i wanna ask is when is a good time to start buying those names later on once i've got the site established so that someone doesnt get a similar name and bum off my hard work! how do you judge if a site is good enough to where you should go ahead and get some more domain names for the same site?

i think it is best to start gearing up after your first high XX low XXX sale as you will know then what to reg (e.g. .coms always best and no tms ). Also, if you have a larger budget, once you get a good sale you could expand in to other tlds such as .bz, .sc, .tw etc... with good keywords

im not sure you understood what i meant or maybe i dont get what youre saying. what i mean is this will be MY website and i will be working on it making it my own thing. im asking when is a good time to start buying the same domain name as my site with other extensions or buy similar domain names so that way when its successfull people wont be taking those and trying to bum off all my work?

any site I have developed I always grab the .com .net .org right off the bat and if I decide to sell at a later date then the new owner gets all 3 of them, I think you are better off grabbing them now before developing then waiting and hoping they are still there later. Depends how many extensions you wish to buy or how unique your idea is if its worth grabbing tons of extensions and similiar domains to point to your main site, I just grab those 3 but it's your decision how far you wanna take it.

can you give me some suggestions on when to tell if it woul dbe a good time to buy it later since that is the only way i can do it ? i already said that i dont have any money to get all three right now so i cant really grab them all or else i already would have

just buy the 1 then and if things work out you can buy the rest later if you wish to and they are still available, "work out" just means that the site becomes popular and is making money, buying multiple extensions just kinda locks down any possible traffic leaks to someone else or someone else putting up a similiar site on your domain name.

Instead of spending cash on every extension under the sun, you could possibly register your name as a trademark. Then when you become as big as Google you can then get your team of lawyers to "persuade" any domain name squatters to give you the names back.

get all 3. put your site on .com and park the .net and .org versions :lol:
Can be pretty lucrative this way ..... if your dotcom site gets popular, you can earn a lot on the .net and .org this way.. more than what you would earn if you were to just redirect the traffic back to the dotcom version
