I have sold a few domains on ebay and although the buyers have paid a couple have not responded to my requests for their account details, one has provided me with godaddy details though has also bought a couple of domains which are reg with 123-reg, to date they still havent provided me with account details for those domains even though I have transferred the gd domains....

Question, has anyone had this happen, where you dont get a response to your emails, or you have transferred domains that they havent accepted into their account and what is a reasonable time to allow someone to provide those details or accept the domain?

And if they dont shall I just refund the money with a message explaining why?

Also I have one domain where the person wanted it transferring to another registrar even though it quite clearly stated the registrar and that they were responsible for any external transfers......do you think that because they didnt want to pay for the transfers costs/rather than a free push, then this is grounds to keep their money?

The joys of ebay...
When I used to sell there, I would keep the names until the buyers came around. Two or three years later, none of the buyers have - and a couple spent $xxx on their names. In all cases, I sent frequent follow up emails and finally warnings.

If the names were sold for small amounts, then I would let the name expire. I don't see any reason to provide a refund, as they won the auction and precluded others from winning.

I suppose it's free money in the bank, but I'm not comfortable with the ambiguity. I would guess that almost none of these people will provide the info you need. If they do, transfer the name. If you've let it expire, tell them so. If they complain about that, just refund the money if it's a small amount. If it's a larger amount, keep renewing the name for a while so it will be there if you get the 1 in 1000 who comes back.

The nature of Ebay is flaky buyers. But since feedback is weighed against the seller, avoid confrontation by the methods above.

non-transfer

I fully agree with Domainace. It's happened to me twice on low value domains. In fact one is about to expire in a few days. I'll just let it drop. At least that way you can't be accused of making money out of someone (which might be the case if you re-sold the domain name)

Regards

Ralph.

Thx for the replies people....

Its just annoying when you try to keep a nice tidy account of your domains only to have a few odd ends..???!!! :)

It is only small transactions though at least.. $xx's

You could also file to cancel the transaction which allows the seller and buyer to mediate, and if the buyer does not respond, the transaction can be cancelled and ebay won't charge any commission on the sale.

If you want to keep things in order create an excel file with multiple columns. On one column write down what you are going to do with this domain. For instance, "drop", "keep til 2014", "keep forever". This way you won't need to remember things.

Here is a tip for MS Excel 2007:
On the first row write column names and then go to "View / Freeze Panes / Freeze top row". Now as you sort according different columns the top row with column names will always remain unchanged.

I have the following columns in my excel file:
1. domain name
2. creation date
3. expiry date
4. registrar name
5. what language the domain is
6. whether whois data is checked
7. amount I paid
8. to renew or not
9. have contacted potential buyers or not
10. date I contacted potential buyers and price I gave
11. where the domain opens. (Here I have things like "parked at sedo", "forwarded to sedo seales page", "forwarded to godaddy sales page")
12. whether the domain is in my sedo account or not
13. other notes
