Curious question,

How long in the future can a domain be registered for? For example, I haven't seen any domains renewed past 2025 in a WHOIS search. When is the max? Could a domain be registered until 2035? Does ICANN have a regulation on this?

Thanks,
Christian

Well it depends on what you mean by 'registered'. The maximum length a domain can be registered with the registry depends on the extension, but none allow longer than 10 years at the current time.
However, there are some registrars that offer longer terms...Epik for example, has a 'lifetime' registration option, where they will renew the domain with the registry forever...but the registry still won't let them register it for more than 10 years, so Epic just has to keep renewing it.

Edit to add: Here is the ICANN page: icann.org/resources/pages/faqs-84-2012-02-25-en#7

Cool! I had my suspicions that it was 10 years, but I wasn't sure. Thanks!

Question is, why would you choose to register for more than 1 or maybe 2 years in advance? None of the 20 odd registrars, we have domains with, offer any incentive or discount to do this.

Sounds like it's time for you to find better registrars? A number of registrars provide cheaper pricing the longer you renew for. Not the biggest fan, but Namecheap, for one example, offers lower pricing the longer you register/renew for.

For gTLDs, it's normally 10 years. For ccTLDs it depends, some allow 20 years, 10 years, or 5 and many others simply do not allow you to renew ahead. The name is renewed and invoiced year after year.

Well, even if there is no discount for multiple years, some people just want to get it out of the way for several years so they don't have to think about it longer. I worked with a client who asked me to renew their domain for 5 years. Why? They aren't tech savvy and don't wanna be thinking about it every year.

@sophia davis, not to pry, but are you single? I have a friend named B.A.R.T., aka Banking Assistance and Registration Technology that I would like to introduce you to?

Sorry Christian, to sidetrack your thread, but I think your question was answered previously to my jackassery!
Glad it made it you laugh though!

Yes, my question has already been answered :xf.grin:

The people who say "1 year" either don't understand the question, are seriously uneducated, or didn't put in enough effort to read the thread.

.tn (Tunisia) will allow you to renew 20 years ahead for example.
.to (Tonga) will even allow 100 years I think :)
