I just noticed that when I do a domain search on moniker, in addition to the usual extensions they now list .travel (maybe it was like this but I just noticed it.) After doing some searches I saw some generics that really fit the extension are still available but reg fee is a hefty 90 bucks....

I don't own any myself but if you Google Samoa, this is in the top spot, and apparently it is owned by the Samoa Tourism Authority.
I have no idea how many countries are using .travel for their official tourism site, it would be interesting to see a few more...

This TLD should be a natural; I wonder why it's not hyped more by the .travel owners?

Registering .travel domain names goes through a very strict policy wherein the company or individual registering the domain name need to validate their company, to show that they are related to the travel industry, to get a unique identification number (UIN).

Once the registry authenticates the company/individual & provides the UIN, they can go ahead & use that UIN for registering domain names...any number of 'em.

Plus, they're bloody expensive!!

It was on the verge of bankruptcy last year and still is on shaky ground.
I would think twice before putting serious money in a TLD that could well sink financially. IMO without any serious development plan definitely stay away.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. I did some more searching and I feel like this extension might be too dangerous for me at this time!

I think it's overpriced, and frankly, too long.

Was that why they approved me for .travel last year when they saw my ian.com affiliate site?
