EDIT: A dummy's guide to registering .TRAVEL domain names:

1. Create a Travel website, it doesn't have to be professional looking, as long as its a "travel information website". The authentication process is very, very liberal. It seems like they want money asap.

2. Get authenticated at:
http://www.authentication.travel/register.jsp?type=U&ap=trap

Make sure you enter the URL of your travel site, or you will not be authenticated. I put down the category of "travel media".

3. Wait for authentication (takes 1-3 business days, you will receive an email with your UIN (number needed to register .travel names) if you are approved. If not, start over at step one and make your site more informative.

4. Go to Encirca or any other .Travel registrar:

http://www.encirca.com/cgi-bin/rgsys/bulkregtravel.cgi
Make sure you enter your UIN. The encirca system works out nice.

5. Log in, change your nameservers, and start developing them babys!

Notes:

Once you are approved, you can register ANY .travel domain you want, with no limits on the number of .travel domains you can own.

The site that you use to get authenticated in does not have to be the final site for the .travel domain. In essence, it could act as a shell site for your "travel company".

Reg Fee is Hefty ($100/year), but IMHO travel niche sites will do well with this extension.

MANY great names available, such as Jamaican.travel, dutch.travel, etc.

Names I got through Land Rush:

Algiers
Kiev
Norfolk
Raleigh
Plano
Belgrade
PanamaCity (best one imo, spring break)
Dhaka
sarejevo
Sofia
beirut
Helsinki
Tripoli
British
English

Post Yours :)

Old news... it seems like the plan for the .travel extension to get out of debt is to open a huge land rush. Looks like the plan is working ;)

What are you expecting to sell those names for. Or are you going to develop them?

I don't see these domains to flip quickly. However, as .travel has finally become available, there are some domains that are likely to become good sources of information, and these could certainly breathe some life into the TLD.

Anybody able to register "reserved" .travel names successfully (and keep it) ?

No, and I think .travel will give us a new year's surprise with a .mobi type auction for those. Greedy bastards. :hehe:

I'd have to agree with spade on this one

I checked on sedo, the 3 letter .travel domains on sale all look rather tempting actually, and ... ignore the uncertainty for a second ... that gotta be the cheapest sex.tld ever.

According to .travel rules, they should all have a site by January 6th(?), which means none should be on sale via sedo by them.

Well my application has gone through but it seems I'm limited to only register my business name which is not a travel service or name.

This is the message I got from them:

Hello,
Your application for a .travel domain name has been authenticated for your business โ€My Business Nameโ€. You can now register any of your eligible names by approaching an approved registrar listed here: (www.travel.travel/dnr.htm). Be sure to provide your UIN xxxxx when registering your eligible domain names. Feel free to contact us further with any questions. Here is a list of your eligible names:

"My Business Name"

You have 5 business days to secure your .travel domain name(s) before your authentication expires. Other entities may also be eligible to purchase these domain names at this time. If you are required to re authenticate, your name(s) have a greater risk of being acquired by others.

so it looks like I'm limited to only register my business name even though I showed them an url to one of my travel websites in my application.

No, that is an outdated email. You can register ANY name, once you get an approved UIN.

Did you seriously register sarejevo.travel? Because the real spelling is Sarajevo.
