Yes not sure why everyone thinks mixed reality just died because Facebook mentioned AR.

VR & AR are amazing in their own right.

But mixed reality is where VR and AR will eventually meet, to combine elemants that create a mixture of some of the good parts of both VR & AR.

Here is one University using the term "VAR".:xf.grin:....Going on to say, "The virtual and augmented reality (VAR) industries are exploding both in terms of application and creation."

He mentioned ‘Mixed Reality’ at the start but not sure if he meant ‘Mixed Reality’ in the context Microsoft is promoting it or a figure of speech as in ‘a mixed reality’.

He seemed pretty adamant calling the technology ‘Augmented Reality’ and that’s where everything is headed.

Obviously with that tech though (whatever it’s called) domains won’t be needed and he spoke how it’s going take 20-30 years to get there, I don’t think any of us see our domains as 20-30 year investments though anyway.

Is this tech the way things are really heading though? Another major company may give another conference tomorrow saying things are heading a different direction - For example, I’ve read next 20-30 years humans are going to merge with AI:-

    http://www.cnbc.com/2017/02/13/elon...es-cyborg-artificial-intelligence-robots.html

    http://www.trunews.com/article/futurist-ray-kurzweil-ai-human-merger-only-12-yrs-away

That happens; do we need to be walking around with AR specs?

I can’t keep up with it all personally, let’s just hope we all make some money before we turn into the bionic man :borg:

Combine a MR device with a bot assistant and you are in the future.

"Don't listen to her, she is a holographic representation of the red queen."

    Settle down Francis !:xf.smile:

Nobody is saying that. If they were, I'd be the first to say they were wrong.:xf.grin:
But I seem to remember someone (or more than one) who had that attitude about VR & AR after the
WMR Announcement which I did not think was correct.:xf.confused:

I think everyone needs to pause to absorb the data in front of them. Because many are starting to sound like newb's. I know many have not went through these tech cycles before.
Especially one as big and complex as this one. A first for me but it still looks like others.
I advise not to be knee-jerk reactionary to 'anything' for names.
And it seems to be inherent to this biz to be that way and you must resist that.:vulcan: It will co$t you.
There are not going to be any milestones made overnight.
It just may seem that way if you are not paying close enough attention to the right things.:xf.cool:
Relax and give it a week or 2 to see how this stuff is read by the industry at large.
    We will hear/see something soon.
And remember, this is about names, not tech. Keep your eye on the 'implications' ball.

Well the one thing I do know mate is that I could post lots of compelling facts that suggest the future is going a certain way but there would be no point because as long as I say it is going to be called mixed reality everyone will be like "impossible" lol.

That guy talked about personally knowing what occulus are working on in it's labs for the the future and he made reference to mixed reality.

He had absolutely no reason to do this, some might say he could get in trouble from zuck himself using the wrong term because it could be seen as promoting a competitor.

The Hololens 2 and Magic Leap are not 10 - 20 years away. Perfect mixed reality might be but Hololens 2 and Magic Leap will be ready in a couple of years.

Microsoft didn't just create a mixed reality platform "Windows" on probably the biggest OS platform so that people could use a VR headset and play around with snapchat like features.

They did it because they are looking beyond 2017 - 2018.

Don't get me wrong I am as chuffed as most by Facebooks announcement but it was something I was half expecting. In the same way I am expecting Apple to announce an AR plan. But that doesn"t mean that I don't see further plans developing where tech is pushed beyond individual VR or AR.

AR is possible in 2017. High quality mixed reality is not.

So in short if anyone mentions the future really is heading in the direction where elements of AR & VR will meet/merge /MAKE LOVE (however you wan't to describe it lol) that is what I am looking at.

But by the logic that I keep hearing on this forum maybe I have got my logic back to front. Because what makes sense to most people is:

What shall we call the tech that combines elements of VR & AR to create a new experience? I know we will call it either VR or AR (n)

    VR + AR = JUST VR (n)

    VR + AR = JUST AR (n)

VR + AR = Another keyword :bookworm:

Good luck to everyone as always, I hope we all make a profit from VR & AR & whatever the future brings us (y)

    Yes I know mate.

Things are playing out pretty much exactly as I thought they would to be honest.

However I did think Apple would announce AR before Facebook, I have to admit that.

I have mentioned many times that 2017 - 2018 will be big years for VR & AR. But I also see potential in what merging ELEMENTS of both these techs can eventually bring.

And as far as terminology goes. I know these companies are trying to twist not only the descriptions but the bounderies of their actual meanings. But imo they will probably achieve this if they keep pushing that direction hard enough (rightly or wrongly).

Maybe AR is just going to evolve into MR, as far as mainstream adoption is concerned at any rate (unless millions rush out to buy the HoloLens 2 or the Magic Leap on release)?

In which case, are people going to gradually start calling it MR rather than AR? Seems unlikely to me.

Augmented reality captures the idea of 3D holograms intertwined with the real world just as well as 'mixed reality' does.

Precisely. And names (at least the popularity of names) aren't necessarily decided by CEOs, tech bloggers, or domainers.

The problem is there are hundreds if not thousands of blog posts, academic papers, press releases, tweets etc coming out on these technologies every day. If you search hard enough you could probably find any acronym or new term to justify hand regging 100 names 'on the off chance'.

I think Ray Kurzweil and other futurist's predictions always tend to be way overly optimistic.

I am concerned that AR/MR names will have less value than VR because the content will mostly be app delivered rather than online. For example, even if AR or MR becomes 10 times as big as VR by 2025, I doubt if ARVideo.com or MRVideo.com (or whatever acronym has 'won' at that point) will have as much value as VRVideo.com

I've noticed a huge spike in traffic to my names this morning - I'm hoping it's because the S8 is being delivered from today. :xf.grin:

@cordoba I don't think mixed reality will just be app based.

It will almost be like an holographic computer platform that you can search for content in the same way that we search for content now.

Obviously I will agree that apps will be present, but that is no differen't for VR/AR or MR.

Thing is though, we’ve heard all about AR’s potential before in Google Glass, one of the reasons it failed was because it’s intrusive and people don’t want to wear glasses or anything else (contacts) in their eyes 24/7, it’s why Lasik is so popular.

So that conference from Facebook is not something we’ve not seen before, Google have done this very same conference a few years ago. Facebook’s vision for this tech sounds great but I can’t see it replacing the mobile phone and everyone walking around with glasses even in 30 years personally like they predict. Mobile is ideal because it just slots in your pocket and doesn’t bother anyone else (until someone points the camera at you and starts recording).

MR/AR (whatever the tech goes on to be called) has a great future in home entertainment and in the workplace imo but not as an item that we walk around in 24/7 like Facebook predict for the reasons I said above.

But the truth is I’m not really bothered what the tech is called mate, I’ve not really invested in MR or AR.

If VR can get 15-20 years and be on top for that amount of time before it moves over and lets AR or MR take over (like you and other MR investors think will happen) then I’d be a happy guy.

If any major tech can get 15-20 years then that’s great.

Diminished reality is a term used to describe the control over one's reality and the ability to block out real or digital information at will. The term was coined by wearable computing pioneer Steve Mannto describe a reality that can remove, at will, certain undesired aspects of regular reality.

Well I am glad you are a happy guy because based on your timescales in 15 - 20 years time I will be homeless, my family would of left me and I will be constantly moaning with @cordoba about how we got it totally wrong investing in the terms that were supposed to bring us holograms :xf.frown:

OZO Storytellers: Helping you deliver new and transformative VR experiences

    Blog_OZO_Sorytellers.jpg

At Nokia, we envision VR completely transforming how people experience the world, through immersive experiences that help the human family feel more together. Today, we announced the next generation of our VR technology: OZO Reality, representing a higher level of VR defined by superior immersion, new creative possibilities, and increased efficiency for the creation, delivery and experience of 360 storytelling. OZO Reality is designed to unlock the full creative vision of VR content, and that’s where content creators come in.

Over the past year, we’ve seen truly extraordinary VR experiences delivered using the OZO camera and software: moments that entertain, inspire and educate us. Soaring on the back of a dragon over New Zealand…an expedition to the top of Mt. Everest to raise awareness of Alzheimer's…or the journey of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee leaving his home in Aleppo in search of a new one.
