Time for a new topic as we watch and wait....

I have been reading on something that really has been out there and better known as virtuality.
It seems the new name for it is now “Virtual Derivative Reality”
Always I warn how these kind of things can happen, but I thought this one may have legs.
For some, I would describe it as a virtual environment created by dimensioning the real environment around you. So, you could reach out and touch that table, but it may not actually appear as it does in the real world.
Your dog walking in front of you could look like a dinosaur etc.
This is how virtuality was described many decades ago.

Microsoft had hopes to go this route with their MR device standard.
Any VR device with stereoscopic cams mounted in front should be somewhat capable.

So, I was willing to take a pop shot or two to grab what might be a fair name, just in case.
I really could only come up with two in practical use...
    VRDgames .. VDRapps
But, I'm sure you folks may be able to think on it right now as I just have to much going on.
So, here it is, open for discussion. Been some time since we had a new possible category.
    Some more info...

I can only find this one article using this term, by Google. VDR primarily refers to Virtual Data Room, a place to store data in a virtual environment.

There is always a lot of hype from industry insiders around new technology, terms and definitions that don't always play out in the real-world

Well, when these things start, if this is a start at all, it is normally a small one if you are really on top of your game. And I'm not saying this is anything, as we have seen this many times.
So, I only made a couple of bets.

Nothing I have read is making much of any hype of this, including me.
I just open the idea for possibility and figure someone out there may have herd something I did not.
    -
And I would strongly advise anyone to be very careful reg'n more that a couple for a play in the space if it should turns out to be anything. That is how many loose their shirts... and names LOL.

A few years ago, several folks that I no longer see on these boards anymore were reg'n heavy on the name space of the tech that does the 3d mapping with distance that makes this a thing.
Of course, I was trying to talk them down to some extent. It's the same old story that a tech used in a final product is not normally going to be a thing with names. There are exceptions.

ie: a vr product that uses fove rendering is just a different kind of vr product. If nobody told you it was in there, you would never know. There are not going to be a half dozen co's out there trying to sell you fove rendering separately. Not that there might not be a couple R&D co's selling it B2B.

Anyway, just bringing it to the table for discussion. Not promoting it. It's been a while since I have even seen the possibility of a new term show itself. Likely, if this does not change terminology again, it will be 4-6 years before we see anything with the tech worth having. It's not a new tech, just a new term applied to it.

Sorry, I wasn't accusing you specifically of hype, just trying to warn people to not jump on the bandwagon with new terminology because it often evolves.

I did that myself 20-years ago and registered quite a number of generic VR type names for a VR business I was starting. Names were very expensive to renew back then, so I dropped most of the VR names because I realised I was way too early. Many of the ones I dropped ended up being the ones I should have kept, and vice-versa. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Good point about not over-investing too early - grab a couple and see what happens ;)

Scientists improved eye tracking technology in VR systems

The tracking of eye movement is one of the key elements of virtual and amplified reality technologies (VR/AR). A team from MSU together with a professor from RUDN University developed a mathematical model that helps accurately predict the next gaze fixation point and reduces the inaccuracy caused by blinking. The model would make VR/AR systems more realistic and sensitive to user actions. The results of the study were published in the SID Symposium Digest of Technical Papers.

    Decided to acquire:

    Location Based AR (.com)

The VR version of this name forwards to hologate otherwise would of liked to own that as well.

I honestly think you should concentrate on a brand name or two
that a franchise might want to use for the LB VR field. Tough nut to crack though.

I'm sure a regular poster had that name and mentioned it here once. Fantastic sale.

This was actually a GoDaddy expired auction so might not have been an end user purchase.

There was a lot of bidding interest in the name, but way above what I could afford at the time.

Unfortunately looks like for whatever reason the previous owner did not benefit from this sale, as they let the name expire.

    LOL
I have a long history of names that never had a offer suddenly having a dozen bidders on the drop.
Taught me a lot on how to let'm go the right way. Some folks are just auction crazy, others don't have the mindset to reg a fair name but know it when they see it.

Someone could have offered a whole lot less and picked it up long before the drop.
And we know there were two of them as that is what it takes to drive a price... competition.

I think the most I have spent on a drop was $900, not that I have not bid higher on others that I did not win.

I know three worders are frowned upon but added:

    VR Fashion Show (.com)

    And decided on a brandable:

    Mixing Realities (.com)

3 word'rs are not exactly frowned on anymore. I know some like to say that still.
Just go look at the sales in any given week and see how many there are now.
I remember making the claim when I had less than 10 years into this that eventually, you would have no choice if the need for memorable names was going to expand. And that was at a time when corporate America still was not online completely.
Of course I was shunned at the time.

Just be sure the words are memorable and consistent with a need or a want.
I think the VRFashion Show was once held by a member here. Drop ?

In any case, I have a lot of 3 word names.

One of the largest sectors for money spent and volume was the insurance biz.
If those same folks were just now getting into the market, It would not be that way, but in any case the need was so great, many used a geo in the names to have a recognizable name and made them 3 words.
The geo collectors went crazy on names then. They tried to apply it to everything else and nothing else was that strong. But there were several others that were a little more than half as strong.

Now we have gTLD's and a much lower demand on nearly everything. Then there is Facebook.

But the reason this would not happen today's world is that they all merged or acquired one another so there are not as many of them. Yes, merger and acquisition is not your friend in more than one way.

I mention this so you think straight in this niche. History is important.

    This rumor just in....

Apple's HMD may release in Q1 (we herd that before) I expect pre-orders xmas this year.
That is not what impresses me...
    It is to feature LiDAR...
That is going to make it a VR/pseudo AR/Mixed Reality in 'a' form of Virtuality.
The outboard cams will basicly have depth perception making a lot of things possible.
While I would not expect this to be great in the beginning, just the fact it is there and ready for dev's will soon allow for more rapid development when Apple sees what the exact needs are in the hardware and supporting platform

Most all of my suspicions have been realized. But I guess we will have to actually see it !

    https://www.macrumors.com/2021/02/03/apple-vr-headset-may-launch-in-q1-2022/

Careful dumping any mixed reality/MR names. You want to see how this plays out.

Some more rumor on the subject...
(there was a time not so long ago these rumors fueled buying sprees in names)

    https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/202...dset-8k-in-each-eye-potential-3000-price-tag/

I really doubt this device is 8k per eye...
4k per eye is very believable !
12 cams is not believable as you might imagine a cam.
12 points of reference from 3 cams is very believable.

...even at a cost under $750 us.

Happy rumoring ! (grain of salt not included)

    BTW...
I have been thinking about my last post a bit. Normally the rumor mill gets it data in some far out prototyping work for future 'potential' release.
The 1st thing they do is try to take concept for what they are trying to achieve and make it work.
Then they make changes to it to make it affordable and keep it working as nearly as well.
Often, that is to much overall and they are shelved till something changes.
That may be just what the rumor came from in that post.
But then again... the pentagon has contracts for some high level and high preforming AR/VR products where cost is not always a total hindrance.

Smell smoke.... just me thinking again.

I guess, if I must boast... the 2 posts from here last year.
    https://www.namepros.com/threads/ho...ty-all-realities.965879/page-274#post-8076781

Pretty close. We will never know for sure. Facebook is not good at telling us till they find a need to.
But as I said in dec...
    https://www.namepros.com/threads/ho...ty-all-realities.965879/page-274#post-8080990
It is a major signal to the devs. They can clearly see a market (in numbers) worth their time and effort to be profitable and will now make the first larger step in need for names we should start to see this year.

We still do not know how apple's release within a year will add to it till we see exactly what the final version is capable of and it's cost. I'm betting on a value for the money, not that it will be cheap.
But I will warn that apple's dev have never added to much more to names than category killing specialty names.

But I have no doubt we are on our way ...'finally' ! New pandemic not withstanding.
You can all exhale now ! LOL Your blue faces have been killing me.

Just have to keep our eyes on sales to know where in names are going to be the strongest early hits.
I'm kinda thinking it will be VRxxxxxx simple names of simple actions/games i.e. vrpong type stuff.
We will see if I can score again so well.
But not much will happen if we do not have a economy past this pandemic.
