GNAME.com registrar is refusing to allow me to transfer a domain that expired just three days ago unless I first renew it.
When I try to unlock the domain and obtain the authorization code, I receive the following error on the system:
"Sorry, the domain name has expired and cannot be transferred. Please renew it."
I submitted a support ticket and received this official response from a “specialist”:
This was after I had already pointed out to them that this practice violates ICANN rules. According to ICANN’s official FAQ:

What to do? They shouldn't get away with this!

Hello, generally, a domain can be transferred and the transfer code can be obtained before it expires. If the domain has already expired, it will not be possible to obtain the transfer code for the transfer.

My domain name has just expired. Can my registrar require me to pay for a renewal before I can transfer the domain name to a new registrar?
No. You have the right to transfer an expired domain. Registrars are not allowed to deny a transfer due to expiration or nonrenewal, (unless you haven't paid for a previous registration period).
